Angel Cabrera and Son Win PNC Father-Son Challenge
Angel Cabrera is one of the more lovable golfers on the PGA TOUR. El Pato has accomplished quite a bit in his time as a professional golfer but what he did this past weekend will forever be special to him.
Cabrera, now 48, has been a successful golfer on the PGA TOUR for several seasons. He’s a two-time major champion, capturing the U.S. Open title at Oakmont in 2007 and winning the green jacket at Augusta just two years later in 2009. Despite this success on the PGA TOUR, Cabrera hasn’t been a big force on the PGA TOUR lately, struggling in his recent appearances.
His struggles, however, haven’t stopped the big man from Argentina from participating in PGA TOUR events. This past weekend, Cabrera participated in the PNC Father-Son Challenge for the first time with his son Angel Cabrera Jr. But despite being the first time the father-son duo played in the event, they were able to pull out a convincing victory by three shots over defending champion David Duvall and his step-son Nick Karavites.

The most ironic part of the Cabrera’s winning the event is that they didn’t even believe they could win. When asked through an interpreter if they could win, Angel Cabrera Jr. immediately uttered “No,” but laughter broke out but the elder Cabrera said, “Sí.” at the same time. Expanding on his thoughts Cabrera senior said “I didn’t have a very good year on tour, so I wasn’t really playing that well, but once you make it to a golf tournament like this and you are able to tee it up on the first hole, you know you can win.”
Adding to the amazing victory by Team Cabrera is the fact that Angel Sr. came into the event not at 100%. The elder Cabrera was dealing with a wrist injury that was a threat to take him out of the tournament. And Angel Jr. hasn’t been playing his best golf either, only participating in 15 events in Latin America and one PGA TOUR start.

Regardless of if they would have won, the Cabrera’s would have had a great time spending time on the course together. But with this victory in their pockets, hopefully, they will be able to see more professional success.
