The legend of Anthony Kim resurfaced after many years when rumors began to spin regarding his potential return to professional golf. After “AK” decided to join LIV Golf, people wondered what he had been up to for the last decade, and in a new wide-ranging interview with David Feherty, Kim told all.

“I’ve had some very dark moments. I’ve had some very low moments,” Kim said in the interview, where he discussed his relationship with golf, his friend group, and his experiences in his time away from the game.

One thing that seems to be true based on Kim’s thoughts, is that money changes everything. It seems AK had surrounded himself with people who were more interested in seem Kim self-destruct rather than build him up. They were there for the party and for the money, and not to support the man who took the golf world by storm at the 2010 Masters.

Kim said in the interview:

“I’m not going to lie, I was around some bad people. People that took advantage of me. Scam artists. And when you’re 24 or 25, even 30 years old, you don’t realize the snakes that are living under your roof.”

He admitted that at one point, he went for months without leaving his house very much, relying on the love and support of six dogs and two monkeys instead of humans. He distanced himself from the public, relying on reality television shows to keep him occupied while he sparred with the prospects of what his life had become.

Injuries are a big part of his story, too. After things like a spinal fusion and surgeries on his achilles, he did not have much to give to golf. Even worse, he had a tremendous lack of any sort of support system.

Kim said he was required to eliminate “basically 98 percent” of the people he had surrounded himself with.

The restructuring of his life and his support system helped him get back on track, but he still had a complicated relationship with the game that he once called his job:

“Golf is important to me and not important to me at the same time…I’ve felt very alone, even when there’s a million people around. I needed to get my mind straight and figure out what my purpose was on this planet…I have an interesting relationship with golf. I don’t think I ever loved it. What’s very weird to me right now is that I’m falling in love with the game.”

After winning three times on the PGA Tour, Kim fell out of the public eye. But now, he’s returned and has started to regain his old form, and although it may be far off, one thing is for sure: a lot of people are rooting for Anthony Kim.
