BETS: Matchups, Faders, Straight Up Winners, & More // Sony Open
Oh so close to a winner last week with Collin Morikawa, but a tough last day had him come up a little short with a T-7 finish. We did cash the Sung Jae Im top 10 bet which was +275, as well as both of the matchup picks, so I’d say that’s quite the start to 2021.
This week we stay in Hawaii at the Sony Open at Wai’alea Country Club, and although we’re in the same state, this is a much different course. It plays at just over 7,000 yards with narrow fairways, so the big bombers shouldn’t have quite as much of an advantage like they did last week at Kapalua.
The mullet man Cameron Smith is the defending champion, and his odds sit at 30/1. While he did play decent last week at Kapalua, me and Jeek from the Pin High Podcast are a little bit mad at him for not winning our top Australian bet, so he’s not going to be my winner pick.
To Win the Sony Open: Collin Morikawa (+1500) and Zach Johnson (+4500)
Last week, Morikawa led the field with 86 percent driving accuracy, which will definitely be important this week, and his iron play is obviously elite, so it’s really just the putter that he’ll need to get going. He actually gained strokes putting at Kapalua, so I don’t see why Morikawa won’t put up another fantastic week at the Sony Open.
As for ZJ, he’s another guy who keeps it in the fairway that has had a fantastic last couple months of golf. This season, he’s 36th in SG: Approach and he’s putting incredibly well sitting at 10th in SG: Putting. I think 45/1 is great value for a guy who has the experience and stats that ZJ has.
To Finish Top 5 at the Sony Open: Kevin Kisner (+550)
When I picked this one out, I wasn’t even aware that Kis finished T-4 here last year, but it certainly doesn’t hurt. He definitely fits the mold for players that flourish here: he hits fairways and putts the hell out of the ball.
To Finish Top 10 at the Sony Open: Chez Reavie (+750)
I’m going with a value pick for a Top 10 finish this week. Although he was cut here last year, Chez was on 59 watch here just a few years ago before shooting a 61 (is that good?). He was 7th in driving accuracy last year and 29th in SG: Approach.
Two Matchup Picks
Joaquin Niemann (+105) over Hideki Matsuyama
Sung Jae Im (-118) over Hideki Matsuyma
Best Bet: Webb Simpson to Make an Eagle (+163)
There are always a LOT of eagles made at this tournament. The way Webb is playing, and putting, he should be able to cash in on at least one.
