BOMBS: Matt Fitzpatrick Hitting Nukes Past Dustin Johnson All Day at the US Open

Matt Fitzpatrick is a world-class golfer.

Displaying classic British humor, he has remarked that his new lowered odds and featured group status for big events was a result of the PGA dragging up the dregs because ‘everyone is leaving the PGA Tour!”.

But the World Number 18 is no joke, and his hard work of late has not gone unnoticed. His recent speed training sessions have been dedicated to increasing his club head speed and therefore distance, without losing his accuracy and altering his swing mechanics.

Fitz was playing with DJ at Brookline yesterday – one of the game’s longest hitters. Where DJ stands at 6’4, with an incredibly athletic move, all 5’10 and 160 lbs of Matt Fitz promptly stood up on the 1st tee and long-balled him. He did the same on the 15th – 176mph ball speed to DJ’s 174.

There are reports that he was knocking it well past DJ most of the day off the tee. At the PGA last month, where he narrowly missed out on the play-off with Justin Thomas and Will Zalatoris, several of Fitz’s drives scampered past those of Mito Pereira, too.

In three years, his average club head speed has increased 5mph, and his strokes gained off the tee has jumped up 49 places in the TOUR roster.

It was arguably one of the weapons not present in Fitzpatrick’s arsenal. If a course was short and tight, he became the favorite. But his recent results on a variety of tracks throughout the 2021-22 season have not been an accident. The short game is exquisite, the mid irons are laser-like, and now he has sharpened up his strokes-gained approach numbers, he is looking like a force to be reckoned with.

Three shots back going into the US Open weekend, I expect him on the first page on Sunday once again.
