Brandel Chamblee is a Moron: Part 137

Leave it to Brandel Chamblee to make me defend Ian Poulter.

After the final round of THE PLAYERS, Brandel Chamblee did his best Skip Bayless impersonation by saying things that seem controversial but are actually just quite dumb.

First, there was the criticism of Poulter down the stretch on Sunday.

Chamblee called out Poulter for laying up on the 16th hole even though Poulter’s lie didn’t lend itself to getting on the green in two.  But that didn’t stop Chamblee from calling Poulter’s approach “the worst shot of the day.”

That was the worst shot of the day?  I suppose the windbag was busy blocking anyone on Twitter that even remotely disagrees with him while J.B. Holmes was hitting people in the head with golf balls.

But, please, go on, Mr. Chamblee…

This regarding Poulter’s shot on 17:

“Look where he’s lining up,” Chamblee said.  “He’s lining up in the middle of the green.  The person he is trying to beat is playing a par-5 behind him, and he’s got two shots to make up, and he plays to the middle of the green.  It’s a fine shot, didn’t cost himself any money, didn’t cost him any world ranking points, but he clearly did not play to win…and he didn’t.”

“We reserve the right to call great players and great shots.  This is why we don’t laud (Poulter’s shot).  We laud the shot David Duval hit, the shots that Tiger Woods hit.  That’s why we laud those, that’s why we stand up and go ‘Well done, great shot.’  (Poulter’s shot), was not that.”

*Face-palm*

First, did Poulter go conservative on 17?  Sure.  But that player behind him is 21 years old.  And we’ve seen what the 17th hole can do to anyone coming down the stretch (Sergio Garcia anyone?).  But God forbid Brandel Chamblee not be entertained!  Doesn’t Ian Poulter know the Brandel Chamblee is watching?!  And if Ian goes for it and puts it in the water, want to guess what Chamblee’s take on it would have been?  Dollar to a donut he would have been on camera criticizing Poulter for not knowing his limitations and taking him out of contention with a poor decision.

Two, if you want to “laud” the great shots, then do that.  You are the one on T.V., Brandel.  You are the one with the microphone.  If you want to talk about the great shots, then talk about the great shots.  Chamblee’s ridiculous statement would be the equivalent of me writing about having to write about Chamblee.  What sense does that make?!

By the way, did you happen to see Poulter’s shot on 18?

But, no, let’s not talk about that.  Doesn’t quite align with your ridiculous premise, does it, Brandel.

Or how about Bello’s freaking albatross!

And three, no one has ever called Ian Poulter a great golfer.  Ever.  Considering he nearly lost his card just a few weeks ago and now finds himself in contention on Sunday at one of the toughest golf courses and fields of the entire season is noteworthy.  Talk about that.

But wait, there’s more Chamblee nonsense!

“Because of the distance constrictions, the very best players cannot play their best game,” Chamblee said.  “It’s not Tiger-proof, it’s superstar proof.”

I literally laughed out loud when he said this.  I mean, this is an all-time dumb hot-take.  Even for Brandel Chamblee.

Jason Day won it last year!

What is this guy talking about?!

Let’s go through the list of some of the other past champions, shall we?

Fowler, Kaymer, Woods, Kuchar, Stenson, Garcia, Mickelson, and Scott.

Producers must mute everyone else’s microphones when Brandel is speaking because I’m certain the roar of laughter would drown him out.

Actually, maybe the Golf Channel could just put a laugh-track behind him.  That way everyone would know to never take this guy seriously.
