A few days ago, Jack Nicklaus officially announced that he and his wife Barbara had contracted COVID-19 earlier this year and had successfully been treated for it. Nicklaus and his wife are both 80, putting them in the category of those who are highly susceptible to symptoms of the disease. Luckily, Nicklaus reported that he had minor symptoms while his wife was asymptomatic.

Typically, those who catch COVID-19 only have to self-quarantine for about two or three weeks until they are completely free of the disease. In the case of the Nicklaus’ though, Jack indicated that they did not leave their home in Palm Beach, Florida for over a month. This all happened at the onset of the pandemic in March so anyone who has concerns about him being back on the course as a commentator or viewer should know he’s tested negative since April.

While many golf fans had absolutely no idea that Nicklaus had tested positive for the disease months ago, Tiger Woods told the media at the Memorial that he had known for some time. “The fact that they got through it and they’re safe and here and healthy, it’s all good news for all of us who are a part of golf and who looked up to Jack and (have) been around Barbara all these years,” Woods said.

The timing of the Golden Bear’s announcement comes at an odd time as just a week before this, he was being criticized by some for saying that he was definitely going to shake the hand of the winner at The Memorial, only if the winner wanted to. Nicklaus doubled down on that after announcing his previous diagnosis because he now has the antibodies but understood if the winner did not want to.

It’s good to see that the Nicklaus family was able to overcome the disease without any complications and that they are now feeling healthy. Hopefully, they don’t have anything like this happen to them again and both Jack and Barbara can continue watching the sport they love.
