NEW: Steph Curry’s PGA TOUR Event Gaining Traction
It looks like the PGA is working on making a new event happen.
According to the San Francisco Chronicle, it looks like the PGA TOUR is back in discussions with Steph Curry about him hosting a tour event. These talks had been happening for a while now but it appears that a deal could finally be struck. The hope is to have the event played in September 2021 at the TPC Harding Park in San Francisco. A sponsor is already lined up as well as it appears that software company Workday is willing to take on that role.
It looks like this deal is being fast-tracked as well, with the San Francisco parks officials pushing through a deal today that will allow the city to renegotiate its deal with the PGA TOUR. This has to be done for an annual event to happen at TPC Harding Park and the fact that this was done recently suggests that a deal on creating this tournament is close to the finish line.
General manager of the parks commission Phil Ginsberg especially likes the appeal Curry would bring to the event. “What really resonates for us is the local flavor of this particular event, given the way it’s going to be structured,” Ginsburg said. “And I think people are going to be excited about it. I think it will draw a very diverse crowd of San Franciscans and the surrounding area.”
TPC Harding Park seems like a great choice for the event but they are going to have to make a sacrifice to gain an annual event. The course is already set to host the PGA Championship this season and that would still happen but if this new event comes to fruition, they would forfeit the right to host the President’s Cup in 2025 as planned. That seems like a pill they’re willing to swallow for an annual event hosted by Curry.
While the prospect of this event seems exciting, it’s important to caution that this is by no means a done deal yet and these discussions have fallen apart a few times now. But with everything seemingly moving in the right direction, don’t be surprised if an official announcement comes out in the next few weeks.
