Bryson DeChambeau Apologizes for Abrupt Handshake

For much of the weekend, it looked like Bryson DeChambeau was going to walk away with the win at the Porsche European Open. But on Sunday, everything went downhill for the American.

Having a solid spot at the top of the leaderboard on Sunday, DeChambeau had a major collapse in his final four holes of the tournament. He finished up holes 15-18 with a bogey-bogey-par-triple bogey including two putts that ended up in a water hazard. That knocked DeChambeau back five spots from the leader and eventual winner, Richard McEvoy.

DeChambeau was playing with McEvoy and after it was all said and done, Bryson appeared clearly rattled by the result.

Following his final tap-in, DeChambeau appeared take out some of his frustrations on McEvoy by greeting him with an abbreviated handshake before rushing off of the green to head back to the clubhouse.

The awkward and seemingly disrespectful handshake didn’t slip by most people either, as he was called out by a few players and analysts for his poor sportsmanship. Even Eddie Pepperell, the guy who finished T-6th in The Open after a rumored hungover round, tweeted that it was the perfect example of a classless handshake.

Has to be said, as far as classless handshakes go, that was a good’n!

DeChambeau eventually apologized to his round mate on Instagram, posting a long caption that condemned his own actions. “I apologize to Richard McEvoy and the fans for my brevity on 18,” DeChambeau said. “He is a class act, worthy champion and I enjoyed playing with him the past two days. Looking forward to next week in Akron at the @wgc_bridgestone and continuing to work hard on my game”

Despite the troubles in Europe, DeChambeau has played well and will be in the field at the WGC-Bridgestone this week. And if he plays well enough, there’s a chance Bryson can secure a spot in the Ryder Cup with an automatic bid.
