Bryson DeChambeau Goes Off on the Haters Over Slow Play

Earlier in the PGA TOUR season, it looked like the off the course story of the year was going to be the changes to golf’s official rules. That criticism has quelled, however, and now the focus is all on pace of play. And Bryson DeChambeau has had a lot to say about this issue.

DeChambeau, of course, is one of the golfers that have been criticized heavily for their slow play during tournaments, especially after a video surfaced of him taking over 2 minutes to hit an 8-foot putt at the Northern Trust a few weeks ago. But DeChambeau has not backed down and has defended his slower pace loudly and proudly. He really voiced his discontent with the issue in a social media rant this week.

“I’m out here, doing the right thing, having a great time with the pro-am guys, killing it,” DeChambeau said. “And honestly, we’re on these guys’ asses all the time. Last week I played under time par, this week we’ll do the same thing.” That wasn’t all he had to say. “Y’all can say whatever you want, but we’re having a f—ing awesome time,” DeChambeau continued. “So screw all y’all haters, no big deal. I still love you all, even though you hate me.”

That’s a pretty strong attack on those that are trying to tell him to just hit the ball and move on. The numbers don’t lie, however, and many different analyses of the pace of play have shown that players are playing their rounds at remarkably slow levels, including DeChambeau. It’s not like Bryson doesn’t understand the issue, however, as he has participated in many meetings with PGA TOUR officials about how to improve pace of play without sacrificing the timing of the golfers.

And to be honest, DeChambeau makes a lot of valid points. For example, he stated in a meeting that the time it takes players to walk to their balls after a shot has to be considered, not just how long it takes to hit a shot. It’s a lot more difficult to hit the shot you want when you just walked 300 yards so I see his point. But obviously that hasn’t gone anywhere and that’s why Bryson is taking a more blunt approach to his “haters.”

Whatever DeChambeau is doing, it’s working as he is one of the most successful players on the PGA TOUR this year. But maybe it would do him well to turn down the rhetoric a bit before he becomes a villain rather than a voice of reason on this important issue.
