Bryson DeChambeau Proves He Is Human After All

The freshly minted PGA TOUR star and media darling failed to make the cut in the Valero Texas Open in San Antonio shooting rounds of 74 and 73.  By missing the cut he proved that he, like everyone else, can just get burned out a little.  He has been playing for several weeks in a row under intense scrutiny and finally paid the price.

In writing this it really gives me a deeper appreciation for what Byron Nelson did when he won 11 tournaments in a row and Tiger Woods wining 7 in a row.  The one thing that helped Byron was he did not have to deal with the media attention and all the distractions that players face today.

Golf is like any other sport and needs to have its heroes and really hasn’t had one since Tiger Woods.  There is no denying that there may be more talent on Tour today than at any other time, but nobody has claimed hero status yet.  If Jordan Spieth had pulled off the grand slam he certainly would have, but he fell short and also had that collapse on the back nine at Augusta.

The most likely candidates are usually the ones that generate a lot of intrigue by bucking the trend and doing things their own way.  Bryson DeChambeau certainly fits that description with his controversial swing and his one length irons. When you march to your own drum beat it takes a tremendous amount of self-confidence and he certainly has it.

The good news for him this week is that he didn’t have to use one of his sponsor’s exemptions for this tournament so he still has a good opportunity to finish in the top one twenty-five and get his tour card for next year. Hopefully he also learned a little something about pacing himself.  I am certainly pulling for him because he absolutely fascinates me.
