Callaway’s NEW Opus and Opus Platinum Wedges – Ultimate Spin and Control

Callaway Golf has brought a new lineup and model of wedges to its repertoire, and I have them in hand to test against other highly-competitive wedge models on the market.

Callaway is flexing its Opus as the “ultimate spin, versatility, and feel” wedge, used by several big-name pros, including Xander Schauffele, who won the 2024 PGA Championship, and Yuka Saso, who won the U.S. Women’s Open, with the new clubs in their bags.

First Impressions

For me, a wedge needs to be confidence-inspiring and the feel needs to be just right. You might be thinking, “Gee, Joey, what a great analysis.” I get it. But wedges are the clubs in your bag that you truly need to have the ultimate comfort over. Everything from weight, to appearance, to feel, needs to be refined and dialed in to your specific preferences.

I am extremely picky with wedges — more so than other clubs. If a driver has a sheen head, I’m okay with it, even though I prefer a matte finish. I can deal with a thicker or thinner top line, I can do a heavier club with an iron.

These are things I’m not willing to deal with when it comes to a wedge.

Initially, these are some of the lightest club heads on a wedge I’ve ever felt. I’ve gone full Vokey with my wedge lineup. I previously played a 52, 56, 60 lineup, but I have since changed to a 48, 54, 60.

The 48 is a T100S black head that aligns with my irons. The 54 and 60 are Vokey 10S, SM9 and SM8, respectively.

I love my wedges; I am very comfortable with them around the greens and I prefer the look and feel of them. However, I do not get the spin I truly want, and find my ball releasing on the green more often than I did with previous Callaway and even Tommy Armour wedges I utilized in the past few years.

I haven’t hit these Opus wedges yet, but my expectations are high. I hope to get more spin than I do with my Vokey wedges. I hope to feel the same confidence and trust I do with the Vokeys from the various distances I use them.

Here’s what Callaway is flexing with its new Opus design:

Spin Gen Face Technology

Most players want adequate spin from their wedges. Spin allows you to be aggressive at pins without worrying about excessive rollout and potentially losing a green.

Callaway evidently used this new Spin Gen Face Technology as a main focus for its new Opus wedges, which are able to deliver spin and control by combining three key elements on the face:

  1. Tighter Pitch – More grooves on the face means more spin
  2. Offset Grove-in-Groove design – Creates spin when the face is open, allowing players to increase loft and add control simultaneously
  3. Aggressive Face Blast – Provides spin and bite on partial shots

Together, the three key elements of the Opus wedge provide crisp, Tour-level spin that promotes short game action and control never before seen in a wedge.

Opus Wedge Design

Higher toe peak, radius in the leading edge, and easier hosel transitions were conjunctive in Callaway’s best wedge shape ever.

Callaway also offers several new grinds from narrow to wide — S grind for a complete and all-around turf interaction, W grind for more forgiveness, C grind for more versatility, and T grind, which is preferred by professionals.

Two Finishes and Trim Levels

Callaway is offering the Opus and Opus Platinum — its two trim levels for the wedge — in brushed chrome and black shadow. It will also make a raw version available in custom.

The Opus Platinum features more technologies and refinements. these include:

“…fusing advancements from metal injection molding (MiM), and tungsten for launch control. MiM Construction has opened the door for Callaway to deliver precision in wedge construction like never before, to dial in touch and feel where players need it. Tungsten has also been incorporated into the topline bringing the flight lower for more control and spin into greens. The designs incorporate Spin Gen Face Technology for Tour level spin along with Tour Certified Shaping.”

Stock Shaft and Grip Options, Pricing, and Availability

Stock shaft options include True Temper Dynamic Gold MID 115g (steel) and UST Recoil DART HDC shaft 65g (graphite), paired with the Golf Pride Tour Velvet +2 Gray grips.

Opus Wedges will be available at retail locations on July 26th at a price of $179.99 each.
