CALLED OUT BY DAD: Rory McIlroy Gets Roasted By His Old Man

With how good players like Rory McIlroy are on the PGA TOUR, it’s rare that anyone gets the opportunity to bust his chops on the golf course. But one man that will always have that right is his father Gerry.

Gerry McIlroy is pretty well known around the European Tour as Rory’s biggest supporter but also as his playing partner in a few pro-ams. Gerry, of course, is no slouch himself, especially having raised a son who has been so dominant on the golf circuit. And Gerry has no problem sticking it to his star son on the golf course.

Since the two are playing in the European Tour pro-am this week, which includes rounds at the Old Course at St Andrews, Carnoustie and Kingsbarns, father and son have been practicing for their tournament and of course that includes some wagers and trash talk. And would you believe it if I told you that Gerry is actually the one taking it to Rory?

“(Let’s do) 4 for the front nine and see how it goes,” Rory said in a video recorded and tweeted out by the European Tour. “4-a-side was too many yesterday.” Gerry wasn’t about to let Rory get away with calling him old though. “It was too much wasn’t it?” Gerry chided. “And to lose two days in a row would really knock your confidence.”

While Gerry may have taken home the win and the bragging rights in their little competition on Tuesday, it was actually Rory that ended up leading a comeback to beat his father on Wednesday. Gerry had his son on the ropes again until Rory won the last four holes after being three down heading into that final stretch. So both men look to have some confidence heading into the pro-am.

Golf has always been viewed as a sport that can be passed down from father to son so it’s great to see that tradition continue at the highest level with the McIlroy’s. The duo has already teed off Thursday but you can still catch them and others over the next two days while the event continues.
