City Golf: GOLFZON’s New Urban Golf Course

One of the biggest complaints (frustrations) with simulator golf is that you can never replicate the short game. Regardless of how high definition of a projector is, you will never be able to replace being on a green and letting your depth perception take over.

City Golf is a new urban golf course, with the first location being launched at Maigang Convention Center in Tianjin, China. And yes, you read that correctly: urban golf course.

Featuring a hybrid golf platform combining screen golf with real greens, City Golf aims to provide a premium golf experience in the city. The 18-hole setup looks to replicate the outdoor playing experience indoors by featuring one screen and one synthetic green per hole across a 106,000-square-foot indoor space. In sum, City Golf combines the advantages of screen golf with real greens to align with GOLFZON’s ESG management principles by preserving nature. While its location in China is a first for the platform, City Golf envisions global expansion to major cities worldwide.

Hong Jin-Pyo, Head of the GOLFZON City Golf TF Team, said:

“City Golf is the most ideal urban golf course, applying GOLFZON’s world-class golf simulator technology and golf course management expertise. We expect it to become the world’s leading golf platform, offering a new and unique golf experience akin to playing a round on a real course right in the middle of the city, starting with China and expanding globally.”

Since building a par-5 indoors isn’t realistic, golfers, instead, hit their tee and approach shots on a GOLFZON simulator. But when you reach a green (whether you made it to the dance floor or find yourself in a greenside bunker), the screen retracts so you can finish the hole by playing on an actual green—curing the biggest frustration associated with simulator golf. Each of the 18 holes features specially designed greens, allowing players to experience the feel of various golf courses.

“Integrating the actual green designs into the game was crucial. We have perfectly established the system through collaboration with GOLFZON’s Chinese subsidiary on site.”

Maigang Convention Center also provides a glimpse into the additional amenities that City Golf venues will include. The comprehensive space serves as a one-stop golf entertainment arena offering golf, fitness and dining to attract a diverse consumer base centered around golf.

City Golf’s operation in China is managed by GOLFZON’s joint venture, GOLFZON China. While it’s repeatedly noted that simulator golf is seeing a major boom, the City Golf model could supercharge the entire industry by eliminating the biggest negatives associated with simulator golf and providing golfers with access to a “course” to play year-round, rain or shine, and absent any concerns that twilight rounds get cut short.
