The collective advancement in technology and manufacturing processes have evolved golf to a game where amateurs can now how a Tour-level experience. Given that you no longer need to be on the PGA Tour (or the financing to warrant the same treatment) to get custom fit, it’s great to see that amateur golfers are taking their equipment seriously. We are seeing more golfers working with brand agnostic fitters who use indisputable data to help identify the golfer’s ideal setup, from driver to putter.
Club Champion—who’s been ranked as a Top 100 Club Fitter by Golf Digest every year since the inception of the list—had a very successful year in 2019. They are fueled by their ability and passion to help golfers of all levels identify and build the equipment needed for the golfer’s success in the game. Club Champion was able to record over 100,000 appointments between January 1, 2019 and December 31, 2019.
“We offer a service that every serious golfer can benefit from,” said Nick Sherburne, Club Champion founder. “Our business model works because the service works – we can show measurable improvements for our customers, and that translates to happy golfers and a higher demand for what we do.”
Each Club Champion location conducts an average of 500-1,500 fittings per year, with many stores surpassing that. But that doesn’t mean golfers get “lost in the sauce”. Even though Club Champion fitting studios (approximately 70 across the US) are closed on Sundays, each location (and their fitters) are able to exclusively focus on just over 4 golfers per day. As every golfer who’s been custom fit (both good and bad), nothing is more rewarding that working with a fitter who is not only patient, but is willing to explain each step of the process and let you try every piece of equipment that catches your eye
Joe Lee, Club Champion CEO, believes in the Club Champion method and the results it garners. “Other people sell golf clubs, we sell improvement,” he said. “We not only solve equipment problems, but we show and explain why each particular piece of equipment (shaft, head and grip) works for their unique swing.”

Club Champions unique approach and dynamic vision has also catapulted them to be ranked as the #1 specialty fitter according to Golf Datatech, the golf industry’s market share monitor.
To help make sure each studio has everything the fitters need to provide golfers with the optimal experience, the typical studio footprint is approximately 3,000 square feet. The space includes a minimum of two fitting bays that are equipped with TrackMan launch monitors, a SAM PuttLab, a build shop, and features an extensive equipment wall with more choices than any other retail chain. As Lee says, “The shaft wall, coupled with our expert fitters, is where a lot of the magic happens.”

Club Champion’s brand agnostic approach has helped them succeed in a market that’s heavily influenced by competing interests, noise, and bias. Just ask 8AM Golf, who has ownership interest in True Spec Golf, GOLF Magazine and GOLF.com, the latter of which just “ranked” True Spec its #1 fitter for 2020.
Because Club Champion focuses on the golfer and not the manufacturer, they’re able to give each customer a unique and informative experience that delivers real results on the course. A Golf Digest study found that eight out of nine Club Champion custom-fit golfers lowered their scores by as much as six strokes per round and added an average of 21 yards off the tee. A similar study by GOLF Magazine found an average gain of 15 yards with Club Champion-fitted irons.
With plans to open an additional 12 locations across the US in 2020, it’s indisputable that Club Champion is one of the fastest growing retailers in golf. With equipment from more than 20 club manufacturers, 15 shaft manufacturers, and 10 putter builders (along with the ability to customize grips, ferrules, paint fill, and stamping), there’s no reason to not see whether your current setup is holding you back and costing you shots.
