Use Clues from Mother Nature to Improve Your Putting
We have all had it; it is one of the most gut-wrenching feelings for any golfer to have; it is the “I-cannot-read-anything” feeling. Next time you are having a round that seems destined for 35, 40 or even 50 putts, use the following odd strategies courtesy of mother nature at its very best.
Read the Sun
The vast majority of amateurs—and perhaps even professionals—are unaware of just how much the direction of the sun can impact the speed and break of any putt. Especially in the warmer-climate seasons and regions, the nice, crisp blades of bent grass or Bermuda follow the greatest energy and nutrient provider – the sun.
The next round in which your putting leaves you scratching your head (as to whether or not your eyesight has changed overnight!), utilize the sun’s position in determining the magnitude of the slopes in your challenging “rolls of the rock.”
Look for Bodies of Water
Streams, rivers, ponds, lakes and oceans are all obviously water-collecting havens. Not only does the elevation descend as you near these bodies of water, but the affected blades of grass are flattened to a certain degree in favor of the direction of water flow.
I have personally found that this does not have quite the impact of the glaring sun on putt break, but this is undoubtedly imperative with judging the overall speed of your putts. The next time in which you are clueless as to how fast your putt will roll or to what extent is going to break, analyze which freshwater bodies are nearby and then use them to your favor.
There you go; this might just be the simplest instruction you had yet to receive.
Cheers to improving your putting via recognition of mother nature.
