Could Tiger Woods Captain U.S. Ryder Cup Team for 2025 and Beyond?

It’s a tradition unlike any other: The winning Ryder Cup team captain is lauded, and players wish for his return, while the losing captain shoulders much of the blame.

While the European team called for Luke Donald to return as captain in 2025, Zach Johnson was roundly criticized in the wake of the U.S. team’s loss in Italy last weekend. To his credit, Johnson himself was among the critics.

“It’s not on them; it’s on me,” Johnson said after Sunday’s singles matches. “Maybe some poor decisions. I can reflect at some point. I don’t have any idea yet. It’s not about those 12 guys. They played so hard for each other and played so hard for our country.”

On NBC’s broadcast, both Dan Hicks and Paul Azinger speculated that none other than Tiger Woods should be captain at Bethpage Black in 2025.

There wouldn’t be a lack of headlines if Woods were in charge of the 2025 squad. If that happens, expect to see plenty of Rory McIlroy’s exchange with Patrick Cantlay’s caddie, Joe LaCava. If you recall, LaCava was Woods’ bag man until Woods elected to have surgery after this year’s Masters.

Speculation has already started that Woods will not only captain in 2025 but will become the first captain since Ben Hogan to lead two teams in a row. Woods did captain the U.S. President’s Cup team in 2019 but has been away from these competitions since his February 2021 car crash. Johnson, however, did say that Woods was an unofficial member of the U.S. both this year and in 2021, providing advice from afar.

These decisions will be a ways off, however, as the next captain won’t be announced until early 2024.
