Courageous Caddie Retrieves Ball from Animal Hole to Avoid Penalty

Sons will do a lot of crazy things to please their fathers in life, especially when it comes to sports. But what one son did this week for his father was borderline dangerous.

After missing the cut at the U.S. Open, Michael Block decided that he would fly out to California to play in the PGA Professional Championship with the hopes of qualifying for the PGA Championship later in the year. Accompanying Block was his son, Dylan, who would be carrying the bag for his father for the event.

The senior Block was having a good round until he hit a ball into the rough on the 15th hole. Once the group got to the location of the ball by a tree, they realized that it had fallen into an animal hole at the base of the tree. This is when Dylan, only 13, lept into action, using a phone flashlight to spot the ball, then reaching deep into the hole to retrieve the ball, giving his father relief without having to add a penalty stroke.

The crazy gesture wasn’t lost on his father, as Michael Brock exuberated with a lot of pride in his son. “A hundred percent, I would not be here playing today if it weren’t for Dylan,” Block said. “I would have been on the road right now heading back to work. For him to find that ball yesterday was absolutely crazy. He’s been amazing.”

And Block definitely repaid his sons efforts, hitting his next shot within 15 feet and making the ensuing birdie putt.

Block ended up finishing the round at even par for the tournament but came out the next day and shot a 66, putting him in a tie for third place. The final round is set to kick off on Wednesday afternoon, where Block will play and learn his PGA Championship fate.

While Dylan certainly deserves praise for grabbing that ball, it was still an ill-advised decision, especially with the dangerous animals that burrow around courses. Hopefully, after that risk, Dylan will be able to see his father qualify for another major this season.
