Davis Love III Makes Three Ryder Cup Captain’s Picks

Rickie Fowler, Matt Kuchar, and J.B. Holmes are officially U.S. Ryder Cup members.

Fowler and Kuchar seemed to be obvious picks based on those that pontificate about these sorts of things, in other words, Golf Twitter.  J.B. Holmes, on the other hand, was seen as a bit of a wildcard.  Making the team over the likes of Justin Thomas, Kevin Na, and, for now, Bubba Watson.  More on Watson in a bit.

Those same folks tend to believe these picks had just as much, if not more, to do with team chemistry than golf ability.

While that very well may be the case, winning also matters when it comes to these things.  And as Justin Ray points out, Fowler has been…not good.

Now let’s talk about the left-handed elephant in the room.

It seems DLIII could be sending a bit of a message to Bubba Watson.  Leaving him off the “first draft” is telling Watson, A. You still need to earn it, and B. You need to show yourself as a better teammate.

After all, Ryan Moore, who has been red-hot as of late would be a good fit, as would Justin Thomas who said this at the beginning of the season, and Mitch Berger has also been mentioned as a possible fourth selection.

Either way, it will be interesting to see the posturing of players for that final spot leading up to and through the final tournament at East Lake.  The final pick will not be announced until September 25th, one week prior to the Ryder Cup.
