DP World Tour Winner Gets Unluckiest Bounce at The Open Championship
Every now and then, we’ll see something at golf’s highest level that makes us weekend-warrior golfers feel better about the uneven state of our game.
At the U.S. Open, Rory McIlroy had one of those moments, and early in the second round of the 150th Open Championship at St. Andrews, we saw another one.
Haotong Li, who won the BMW International Open in Germany on the DP World Tour last month, was lining up his second shot on the par-4 first hole Friday morning, and the shot looked to be a good one.

Instead of a bounce up to the green for a birdie chance, Li’s shot ricocheted off the wall of the Swilican Burn and flew backwards.
In all, it traveled only 44 yards after lining up 117 yards away from the pin.

While it could’ve been worse by landing in the burn, Li seemed rattled by the bad break, as he ended up carding a triple-bogey 7 on the hole.
He finished at +5 on the day and +6 for the first two rounds, missing the cut in his third-straight Open after a third-place finish in 2017.
