Jason Day’s reign as the number one golfer in the world ended this weekend after a 47-week stay at the top. Dustin Johnson now claims that title after an impressive weekend at the Genesis Open.

Johnson not only won the tournament this weekend, he did so in very impressive fashion. After entering the final round with a five-shot lead, Johnson continued to dominate, stretching his lead to nine shots at one point. He ended his tournament with a final round 71, which allowed him to cruise to a five-shot victory.

By moving to the number one ranking in the world, Johnson becomes the 20th different player to be ranked number one in the last 20 years. When asked about becoming the world number one, Johnson said that “It sounds good. I played really great all day. I couldn’t have driven it any better. That was a big key.”

Despite losing out on the top ranking that he had held for almost a full year, Day has no qualms about moving behind Johnson. “He deserves it because he’s been playing great golf,” Day said after the tournament’s conclusion.

To underscore how well Johnson played this week, he went 49 straight holes without a bogey on the way to his victory. This victory has capped off a good streak of golf for Johnson. Since winning the U.S. Open last year, this victory is Johnson’s fourth against some of the best golfers in the game.

Playing as well as he is at the moment and now holding the ranking as the number one golfer in the world, Johnson will be carrying a lot of momentum into The Masters, where he will have a good chance to add to his major total.

All this came days after his wife Paulina Gretzky announced the soon-to-be birth of their second child.

Things are looking pretty darn good for DJ and company.
