The golf world is mostly focused on the U.S. Open coming up next week but for many golfers, they are looking for one more tune-up round before they head to Shinnecock Hills. Luckily for them, the St. Jude Classic is played the week prior to the event, providing many of golf’s top performers a practice outing before the big show next week.

One golfer taking advantage of this week’s event is world number two Dustin Johnson.

Johnson is no stranger to the St. Jude Classic, as he has played in the event in four of the last six years that he has qualified, winning the title in 2012, and using it as a steppingstone for his U.S. Open win in 2016. After that victory, Johnson didn’t participate in the event in 2017, which also resulted in him missing the cut for the U.S. Open at Erin Hills.

Dustin Johnson’s hole-out chip shot from the water at FedEx St. Jude

Because of that missed cut, it should be no surprise that Johnson is back and competing at the event again. And his choice is already paying dividends in the luck department.

At one point in his first round, Johnson found himself on the edge of a water hazard and had to take off his shoe to play his shot. The result ended up being a remarkable chip-in for birdie.

The shot was a great end of the day for DJ, as he had a roller coaster round that saw him record a double bogey, along with multiple birdies. After making that shot, Johnson went on to birdie one more hole to end his round at three-under, just two shots behind first round leader Seamus Power and one shot behind a cluster of players that finished at four-under.

It sure seems like DJ is looking to rekindle some magic that helped him out several years ago. And as long as he keeps on making tough shots like that water chip, it looks like luck could be on his side once again.
