Swedish Golfer Runs for His Life from Charging Elk

All golfers have heard other players tell them to beware of danger on upcoming holes. While that usually means that the hole is difficult and has some dangerous hazards, this phrase could have been taken literally by a Swedish golfer.

Last week at Sweden’s Karlstad GC, an amateur Swede, Christer Sjogren, went out for a round with a buddy. Sjogren faced a lot of danger on the course but not from thick rough or a hidden pond. Rather, Sjogren had to try and out maneuver an elk calf that he came across in the middle of the fairway.

The elk was simply minding his own business until Sjogren approached it and started toying with the animal. He quickly realized that this was a mistake, as the elk wasn’t afraid of the Swedish golfer at all and ended up charging after him. And rather than helping out his golfing pal, Sjogren’s friend, Tony Swahn, decided to film the ordeal for the world to see.

After getting away from the elk and finishing his round, Sjogren revealed exactly what he tried to do to get away from the calf. First, he tried to hide from the elk and realized that wasn’t a good idea. “…he followed me the whole time,” Sjogren said, “So I thought I’d start running to see what would happen. When I started running, I realized that wasn’t a good decision.”

Animals seem to be a lot more involved on the golf course this year than in years past. There have already been a ton of reports and videos of giant alligators and pythons moving across local fairways. Elk, however, don’t seem like they are going to be as big, or as dangerous, of a problem unless you are golfing in the Scandanavian countries.

If there is anything to gain from this story, outside of a laugh, it should be to avoid poking fun at animals on your local course. Because as Sjogren showed us, it never ends well.
