Golf Pro Hits Two Aces in One Week
It is on every golfer’s bucket list to nail a hole-in-one during a typical round. For assistant golf professional Tanner Megal, he was able to accomplish that dream and more this past week.
Megal is the assistant golf pro at Cedar Rapids Country Club in Iowa and has been in that role since May 2015. On June 19th, Megal was out at the Finkbine Golf Course in Iowa City enjoying his round when he hit a 6-iron into the 208-yard fourth hole. After watching the ball take a favorable first hop on the green, Megal lost sight of the ball and had assumed it went over the green. Shockingly, Megal found the ball in the cup, which was his first ever ace.
This hole-in-one must have put Megal in a groove, as he decided to play a round at his home golf course exactly a week later. Long and behold, last Monday Megal stepped up to Cedar Rapids Country Club’s 151-yard fifth hole, hit his 9-iron and hit yet another ace! This time, Megal was able to watch the ball roll into the cup after it landed six feet long and spun back in.
The odds of pulling off this feat are virtually insurmountable. According to Golf Digest and the National Hole in One Association, there is a 1 in 5000 chance of a low handicap golfer hitting an ace. For an amateur golfer, those odds jump all the way up to 1 in 12,500. But making two aces in one week’s time? Those odds have a lot more zeros added to them.
Asked which hole-in-one was more memorable for Megal, he said that he was more excited with the second ace. “For me, that was more exciting to see it go into the cup,” the Bismarck, North Dakota native said. It was also more meaningful for Megal to the second ace to come on the course he has served as the assitant pro for the past two years.
As for the next goal that Megal has, he jokingly stated that he wants to hit an albatross on a par 4. And with the way he’s hitting the ball right now, I wouldn’t be surprised to see him cross that off of the bucket list next Monday.
