EQUIPMENT: DJ Ditches Multiple Partner Brands for Travelers Championship

Just days before the 2021 U.S. Open, LA Golf Shafts announced that then-World No. 1 Dustin Johnson would be partnering with the brand, joining its Board of Directors (alongside Bryson DeChambeau) and putting into play a new driver shaft model.

Unfortunately, DJ has lost confidence in the LA driver shaft since he was just spotted with his “Old Reliable” Fujikura Speeder during the Pro-Am for the Travelers Championship at TPC River Highlands.

As we discussed just last week, DJ doesn’t present himself as a gear-junkie, as he recently forgot what model putter he was playing at the 2021 PGA Championship. Similarly, DJ has played the same shaft (the Fujikura Speeder) for the better part of 5 years, despite TaylorMade releasing (at least) 5 new driver models during the same period of time.

Speaking of which, DJ also ditched the TaylorMade SIM2 MAX he had in play at Torrey, and went back to the SIM. TaylorMade can’t be thrilled that their top staffer (so long as Tiger is on the sidelines) is not playing the current-generation equipment.

But at this point DJ (and TM), can all use a win, whatever it takes.
