EQUIPMENT: Dustin Johnson Partners with LA Golf Shafts
Equipment changes on the PGA TOUR always bring a certain buzz about them, and raise the question as to why one of the best players in the world would go from product “X” to “Y”? This question is particularly more noteworthy when a golfer switches from an “old faithful” product to something else (like when Henrik Stenson left behind his Callaway Diablo 3-wood).
Current World No. 1, Dustin Johnson, is the most recent player to make a substantial change. After being a longtime, avid user of Fujikura’s offerings, including the Speeder Evolution Tour Spec 757 and Ventus, DJ announced today that he will be partnering with LA Golf Shafts.

For those unfamiliar with the brand, LA Golf Shafts, the company was previously known as “Matrix Shafts” until they were bought out in March 2018. During that short period of time, the company making everything, including material sourcing, prototyping, manufacturing, and testing, in the United States; and offering amateurs the opportunity to buy the exact same model as the pro (NO “Tour Spec” offerings unavailable to the public).
Those changes have also helped fuel LA Golf Shafts to release some kick ass products, including the B.A.D Prototype Rebar graphite shafts Bryson DeChambeau used to help secure his first Major (2020 U.S. Open at Winged Foot) and the TPZ putter shaft that Rickie Fowler (alongside Kevin Na and DeChambeau) has frequently used.

Only making DJ’s move more interesting is that he hasn’t really come off as a “gearhead” who gets involved with different club head and shaft specs. In fact, DJ confessed during the PGA Championship last month that he didn’t even know what model TaylorMade putter he was playing.
However, DJ clearly spotted something in LA Golf Shafts that he hopes will give him an edge and help him retain on that No. 1 ranking.
Although it’s still early in the week, DJ has a LA Golf Shaft in his driver that, by his words, will allow him to “go after it”.
