EQUIPMENT: Is This Launch Monitor Too Good To Be True?

Since they’ve been in the game, finding a quality launch monitor at an affordable price has been next to impossible. PGA TOUR Pros use Trackman and ForeSight, who both come with a heavy price tag ($19,000 for TM, $18,000 for FS). There are companies that make them on the more affordable side – Rapsodo: $399, FlightScope: $499, SkyTrak: $2000. But now, you can have your own personal launch monitor…for free?

A new app called “Shot Vision” has hit the market recently, which supposedly turns your smartphone into a launch monitor. Shot Vision currently offers the option of 2 plans. The first one being their free version, where the app will provide limited metrics. The second one being the $6.99 a month option that unlocks all metrics to truly help you dial in your game.

But does it work?

Harry from MyGolfSpy.com gave it a go, and the results were, let’s just say mixed. If you’re using it indoors, you better have the lighting of a movie set. It struggles to pick up anything, and when it does the data was 30%-50% off from the GC Quad he was testing it against. Now outside, he occasionally saw accurate information. Again, the device needed good lighting, but every now and then it would spit out data close to the GC Quad.

After reading his review, I had to give it a go. I will say one thing, setting up the phone and navigating through the app was very easy. But as soon as I started hitting balls, this thing is nowhere close to being ready. It was accurate sometimes, but not nearly enough for me to use it every time I step foot on the range.

As technology gets better, there is no doubt in my mind that these sort of apps will also get better. But for me, they have a long way to go before they start competing with devices like TrackMan.

I grew up in southern New Hampshire, where I first fell in love with the game of golf. I started by just going out and messing around with my buddies and focusing purely on having a good time! I never took golf seriously until I moved down to Tampa, FL to attend the University of South Florida. Go Bulls! At the start of my junior year I got a job working as a cart boy at a local private country club. This is when I started to focus on golf becoming my career. During the fall of my senior year, I turned from a 14 handicap, to a 2. I passed the PAT scoring test my first try and haven't looked back.
