EQUIPMENT: New Releases from TaylorMade, PING and KZG

As the saying goes, “Christmas in July” is fast approaching, and it seems like some of the OEMs are giving us insight into what Santa could be dropping off this year.

Starting with TaylorMade, it’s time to make sure their staffers are ready to score during the back half of the 2023 season, including, perhaps most importantly, the fast-approaching Open Championship.  And to help with every lie they’ll face over the next few months, TaylorMade is preparing to release its MG4 wedges.

Like the current MG3s, the upcoming MG4s appear to feature—like the name suggests—a CNC-milled sole grind. What does not appear clear from the teaser images is whether the MG4s will feature an evolution of the Face Micro-Ribs found on the MG3s or something new. Indeed, the MG4s, at first glance, appear to feature a much smoother face, and wedge faces have become an interesting area of development, including unique hydrophobic coatings now found on the PING and Cleveland wedges that help reduce spin reduction in wet playing conditions.

The MG3s were released on August 10, 2021, so expect a few more weeks of teaser images before TaylorMade makes its formal product announcement.

After debuting the G430 drivers earlier this year, PING is now bringing to market the complementing fairway woods.

Like the drivers, the G430 fairways will be available in 4 models:  MAX (high MOI and forgiveness), LST (low-spin), SFT (Straight Flight Technology),  and the all-new High Launch (higher launching for slower swing speeds).  Each model, however, will feature PING’s new Carbonfly Wrap technology that helps reposition the center of gravity to maximize ball speed and forgiveness for each respective model.

The MAX will be available in 3W, 5W, 7W, and 9W, LST in 3W only, and SFT in 3W, 5W, and 7W. Loft options for the High Launch have not yet been confirmed.

Finally, is two new iron offerings from KZG—a smaller, premium manufacturer that maintains a steadfast commitment to precision.  And while you may not see KZG’s on the shelves at your local store or on the TOUR, their irons are a thing of beauty.

And for 2023, KZG is bringing to market the CBI and MBI irons.

Both are unquestionably better player’s irons and feature triple forging and CNC milling to adhere to KZG’s “precision” ethos.  Regardless of which model, they start as a piece of 1020 carbon steel that is carefully refined into a low-offset, premium iron.

Likewise, both feature a single weight port on the backside of the iron that allows fitters to dial in the swing weight of each head without worrying about tip weights—which eventually loosen due to repeated turf interaction—or CG being disrupted.

Further, unlike mainstream options, KZG products are never sold over the internet or over the phone. Instead, every KZG club is custom-fit by a skilled professional and individually handcrafted to precise specifications. As a result, when you buy a KZG, regardless of which model, you play a club that was fit and built for you.

Ever since golf became a competitive outlet, nothing brings Eric more joy than a well struck 4 iron. And despite living in NYC, Eric makes it a priority to work on his game and fitness during the week, along with a round or two over the weekend. Fortunately, he’s got a very understanding fiancé who (for the time being) accepts him and his obsession. Follow Eric on IG @hozel_rocket.
