EQUIPMENT: The Brand-New TaylorMade SIM2 Is Here
The SIM was, and still is, the best driver I’ve ever hit. The combination of superior distance, and incredible forgiveness made it a must own for any golfer looking to improve their game. Now, TaylorMade has announced its replacement, the SIM2
Before we get into all the specs of the new model, I want you to hear what it sounds like. Rory McIlroy is in Abu Dhabi this week for the HSBC Championship, and of course has the new big stick in the bag already. Let’s just say it sounds…powerful

Of course, results may vary from the best driver of all time.
The acoustics are outstanding. In my opinion, there is no better sound a driver can have than the dead, pure noise of the SIM2. It not only gives immediate feedback of a quality strike, but installs a feeling of distance. A lot of distance.
So, what have they changed? Well to the eye of a casual golfer, not a lot. But once you really start looking at the specs and construction, TaylorMade has completely re-designed the SIM2’s predecessor.

Let’s start with the most exciting piece, the Forged Ring Construction. The FRC is TaylorMade’s ‘key’ to unlocking,“a new dimension of distance and optimal forgiveness” in the SIM2. It’s constructed with high strength, lightweight aluminum which is then precision milled. The Forged Ring acts as the uniting force for all critical pieces of the head. This allows the SIM2 to be a singular force built for forgiveness and power.
Next, the improved aerodynamics. If you recall, the SIM featured an angled bridge along the bottom of the head that improved aerodynamics, making it easier to produce effortless speed. TaylorMade has improved on that feature as well. The SIM2 now has an all-new Inertia Generator, formed by an 9-layer carbon sole. This panel is also strategically angled to improve aerodynamics where it’s needed most – the bottom of your swing. It produces higher club head speeds coming into the ball, resulting in longer, straighter drives.

At the peak of the Inertia Generator sits a 16 gram steel weight. This, along with a TPS Front Weight strategically located closer to the face, encourage optimal launch and low spin. In other words, the perfect combination for hitting the golf ball a long way.
The SIM2, of course, features TaylorMade’s Twist Face Technology first featured in their M3 and M4 models. Twist Face, “improves ball speed by calibrating each head to the threshold of the legal speed limit with corrective face curvature also protecting against heel and toe mis-hits.”
Changes
There are a few stand-out differences with the new model. The Speed Injection ports are no longer featured on the face. Instead, it is located in the head, near the toe of the club. For comparison, here is the face of the SIM…

On top of this, is the abandonment of the adjustable weight track. This is the first time a TaylorMade driver will not feature a track since the AeroBurner (2015)
The SIM2 comes in 3 different models. The SIM2, SIM2 Max, and SIM2 Max D. In order, here are their specs…

And if you don’t like the color scheme of the SIM2, don’t worry – it’s completely customizable. Just like they do with some of their putters, TaylorMade will now allow their golfers to completely design their own version of the SIM2.

I won’t know if the performance of the SIM2 is better than the original until I hit it, but I can tell you one thing, I love all the changes TaylorMade incorporated in the new model. Full, hands on review, coming soon…
