Extract Double Digit Gains with PXG’s Black Ops Drivers, Fairways, and Hybrids
Playing Through: The PXG Black Ops Driver & Fairway Woods have completely replaced my prior, custom-fit gamers. They’re faster, longer, more accurate, and more forgiving, which enabled me to immediately shave a few strokes off my handicap once they went in the bag. And that’s largely due to the fact that Black Ops are PXG’s best metalwoods yet, in addition to being, arguably, the most customizable metalwoods on the market right now. All of this leaves only one question for me: how many strokes will the Black Ops help me knock off my handicap before the end of this year?
With the USGA and R&A’s steadfast commitment to reeling in distance, OEMs have largely prioritized forgiveness and—in the hopes of exposing the last bit of ball speed and distance that may remain—turned to incorporating alternative materials. TaylorMade, for example, has gone all in carbon (at least on its recent drivers).
PXG has arguably cracked this nut with the Black Ops by developing a lineup that prioritizes forgiveness, which is then paired with a high, fast, and long ball flight. The best part of PXG’s Black Ops is that the unrivaled degree of customization means that their offerings can be optimized for every golfer and their desired ball flight.

The Black Ops Collection consists of four different models, each of which are available in a wide range of lofts:
- Black Ops Drivers:
- 0311 Driver: 8° (RH Only), 9°, 10.5° and 12°
- 0311 Tour-1 Driver: 8° (RH Only), 9° and 10.5° (RH Only)
- Black Ops 0311 Fairway Woods: 15° (3), 17° (4), 18° (5), 21° (7) and 24° (9)
- Black Ops 0311 Hybrids: 17° (2), 19° (3), 22° (4), 25° (5), 28° (6) and 31° (7)
Both Black Ops Drivers benefit from PXG’s all-new Advanced Material Face (AMF) Technology, a proprietary high-strength titanium that yields maximum ball speeds, while the Fairway Woods and Hybrids both, instead, feature a proprietary high-strength stainless steel. Regardless, the faces on each of the Black Ops models are designed to promote a fast, high flying and lower spin to help promote maximum distance (with the only caveat being the Tour-1, which is designed to generate a lower ball flight with super-low spin).

Additionally, each and every model receives what, I think, makes PXG’s offerings the best of 2024—Precision Weighting Technology (PWT) (pictured above). In brief, each model features three strategically placed weight ports that—with the help of 8 different weights (ranging from 2.5 grams all the way up to 20 grams)—dial-in face control and, thus, ball flight. Regardless of what weight setup you go with, the PWT’s weights can always be adjusted to assist with swing changes and desired ball flight.

I went into my Black Ops fitting with the following custom-fit clubs in the bag:
- Driver: PXG GEN6 Driver (9° head) with Graphite Design Tour AD TP
- Fairway Wood: TaylorMade SIM2 Titanium 3 Wood (15° head) with Fujikura VENTUS Black
- Driving Iron: Callaway X Forged UT Driving Iron (18° head) with Nippon N.S. PRO Modus3 GOST
These clubs have been pretty good to me; since being added to the bag, I’ve gotten my handicap into the low 10s. But I would have never expected that by substituting in the Black Ops Driver and Fairway Woods, I would be able to obtain a single-digit handicap.

PXG Black Ops Driver & Fairway Woods Have Unlocked New Scoring Potential Since Going in the Bag
- Driver: PXG Black Ops Driver (9° head) with Graphite Design Tour AD TP
- Fairway Wood: PXG Black Ops Fairway 3 Wood (15° head) with Fujikura VENTUS Black
- Fairway Wood: PXG Black Ops Fairway 7 Wood (21° head) with Fujikura VENTUS Black
As the fitting video shows, each of the Black Ops clubs generated double-digit gains in distance over my prior, custom-fit gamers without sacrificing dispersion—in fact, the dispersion was reduced with each club thanks to the PWT Technology that let us rial dial in my tight, fade ball flight. And my results aren’t unique; thousands of other golfers are, in fact, seeing double-digit gains by switching to Black Ops. That’s right, during the PXG Black Ops Driver Challenge (where the Black Ops Drivers outperformed the competition over 98% of the time), golfers were seeing an average 12-yard distance gain and a nearly 19-foot dispersion increase.

Results from PXG’s Black Ops Challenge Speak for Themselves: Thousands of Golfers Are Seeing Double Digit Improvements in Distance AND Dispersion
The gains, notably, didn’t disappear when these clubs went from the simulator bay to the course. In fact, Shot Scope data has shown that the distance has remained consistent with what I was seeing on Trackman during my fitting. And that’s exactly how custom-fit clubs should be; they should inspire confidence from the very first shot.
And while no golf club will eliminate your misses (you are still human, after all), the Black Ops has kept my ball on target significantly more frequently, and with my misses not anywhere as punishing as they had been before.
The measurable and meaningful improvement has also made hitting each of the Black Ops clubs fun—the Black Ops driver has empowered me to have plenty of straight-forward wedge shots into greens on par-4s (in addition to going after some par-5s in two), while the three and seven woods have allowed me to attack layup targets (and even some greens) with plenty of confidence. As mentioned above, this newfound distance, accuracy, and confidence has enabled me to shave a full stroke off my handicap during the 1-month period the Black Ops have been in the bag.
While I can’t guarantee you a single-digit handicap, I am willing to bet that even adding just one of PXG’s Black Ops metalwoods will improve your on-course performance. Data has shown that it’s almost certain you’ll see improvements in distance and dispersion.
The Black Ops are PXG’s best metal woods to date, and by not testing them, you could very well be holding yourself back from playing your best golf. While you’re there, make sure to also test out PXG’s other potent offerings, including the recently released Black Ops GEN7 Irons and Sugar Daddy III Wedges at your local PXG Store & Fitting Studio.
