Faldo Doubts Tiger Woods Can Win The Open, Calls St. Andrews the Perfect Place to Retire

From one former Open Championship winner at St. Andrews to another, Sir Nick Faldo believes that Tiger Woods isn’t ready for the physical challenge that The Old Course provides to challengers.

Faldo, in his last year of broadcasting for CBS, spoke with Sky Sports about the world’s most famous golfer and his return to what he calls his favorite course.

 Faldo, the 1990 champion at St. Andrews, said:

“The physical challenge is just walking a golf course and even though St Andrews looks flat, there’s so many twisting undulations walking that course, it’s going to be physically really hard work for him… Even if Tiger was fit and strong, he doesn’t play much, and these kids are young and strong. Who knows what we’re going to get from Tiger, where he mentally is and what he’s thinking.”

Woods, who won at the “Home of Golf” in 2000 and ’05, has played twice since a February 2021 car crash devastated his left leg. He made the cut at both the Masters and PGA Championship, but he withdrew from the PGA after a third-round 79. He skipped the U.S. Open in order to be ready for this week in Scotland.

Woods has obviously had this event circled on his calendar, but what if his performance isn’t up to the standard he sets for himself?

Faldo speculated:

“If you’re going to retire then this is the place to retire, but is it too early? What does he know, and what does he believe about his leg or his golf game? What possibilities are out there? I don’t know – Tiger always keeps this very close to his chest.”
