Sergio Garcia has always been a fan favorite on the PGA TOUR and fans are always looking for the chance to interact with the now-Masters champion. But for one fan, persistence has finally paid off.

An English mailman named Mark Johnson is one of Garcia’s loyal fans and had a wild idea of trying to get Garcia to let him carry his bag. To get his request out to Sergio, Johnson tweeted for 206 straight days hoping for Garcia to respond. After the nearly full year of tweeting Garcia finally gave in to Johnson’s demands and offered him the opportunity to caddie for him back in January.

At that time, Garcia told Johnson that he would allow him to carry his bag at the Wednesday Pro-am before the British Masters. Well, that day finally came for Johnson earlier this week where Sergio lived up to his promise. Johnson was able to carry Garcia’s bag at Close House Golf Club, this year’s host of the British Masters.

Johnson was off to a fast start with Sergio but then, as he explained, things went a little off the rails. “He got off to a birdie start so I’ll take responsibility for that,” Johnson said, according to the BBC. “But then I dropped his bag.” Despite dropping the bag, Johnson was able to successfully caddie the entire pro-am for Garcia, living out the dream that he relentlessly pursued.

For Garcia, this was an awesome moment that he was able to share with a fan and he enjoyed every moment of it. “He was relentless,” Garcia said. “He was great today. We had a good time.” While most golfers probably would have ignored or blocked Johnson, it was nice of Garcia to give him this opportunity, something that many wouldn’t expect from a player that has been previously described as bitter and selfish.

If there’s one thing to learn from this story, it’s that persistence really does pay off. So while tweeting your favorite golfer consistently won’t always work, asking nicely could get you the day of your life just as it did for Mark Johnson.
