Fantasy Golf Picks, Odds, and Predictions for the RBC Canadian Open

The 2016 RBC Canadian Open Fantasy Preview

It was a wild and exciting week for our Premium Members at Royal Troon—that is, if you took our advice and stuck Mickelson (and his 113 Fantasy Points) on your roster.  More to come about last week shortly, but first let’s get ready for the RBC Canadian Open.

The dreaded Open hangover.  Who’s playing, who’s withdrawing, and who’s going to show up in fantasy beast mode?  As of now, Dustin Johnson and Jason Day are the headliners this week, and the field will be filled with more lower-caliber players—predominantly a spillover from the Barbasol last week. With only six weeks remaining on the schedule before the first round of the playoffs, these players will be on the hunt for some essential FedExCup points.

Speaking of Jason Day, this is the exact scene where the 28-year-old emerged to become No.1 in the world. His last victory came in May at THE PLAYERS, and since then he’s blown some opportunities for more win, with some recent closing round struggles. He comes in seeking to be crowned the only back-to-back winner here since Furyk in 2007.

Last Week’s Fantasy Results

So let’s break it all down from Royal Troon. Before we get excited about Mickelson, let’s analyze our Horse Pick Dustin Johnson.

Dustin outplayed the popular choice of Jason Day with 71 Fantasy Points (FP) to Day’s 61.5.  He finished T9 and earned an extra 8 Fantasy Points because of that top 10 finish, with 52 incredible pars, 13 birdies, and only 4 bogeys across four tough days of golf.  Spieth wasn’t even in the conversation with the amount of bogeys he put up.

Although Mickelson’s 113 points were clutch, having him with Stenson would have been the most ideal.  This was one of the two roster suggestions we offered our Premium Members last week:

With DJ

That lineup produced a little more than 400 Fantasy Points despite losing Lingmerth to the cut.  With all of the other expensive options like Fowler, Rose, Garcia, etc., we felt Mickelson was extremely under-priced for his value and the current state of his game, so at that price tag, he was a no-brainer.

We offered another sample lineup that contained Stenson, but in the end his dominance last weekend was a bit of a surprise to everyone.

In the end, we’re pleased with our picks at the Open. We finished with five of seven made cuts, three Top 12 finishes including a 2nd and a T9, and banked over $1.3 million in combined players earnings. With a solid mix and match of Sleepers (like Andy Sullivan) and Top Picks, we had a very successful week at Royal Troon.

Now let’s review our GPFP Algorithm. Take a look down the right column titled PPFP, which stands for Price Per Fantasy Point, a simple calculation dividing a player’s weekly salary by his GPFP.  A player’s GPFP (Golficity Projected Fantasy Points) is a player’s forecasted fantasy points for the upcoming tournament based on a weighted algorithm factoring in over 20 different key performance statistics. If you’re not a stats-head like us we apologize for the long dictation, so here’s the short of it: signs pointed to Mickelson as being an extremely undervalued player within his respective salary range.

Fantasy Golf Picks and Predictions

Although Phil fell just short of the win, he still managed to put up some solid points thanks to his 2nd place finish (+20 points), two Bogey Free Rounds (BOFR, +6 points) and he outplayed over a dozen people priced higher than him.

In case you don’t know how the scoring system works on DraftKings DFS, check out this page out for a full breakdown. I bet you didn’t know players earn +3 points for birdieing three holes in a row?

The 2016 RBC Canadian Open Field

The top picks this week in focus are DJ, Day, Kuchar, and Snedeker. Those four make up the only five-figure salary players in DraftKings this week. It’s not every day you get to see a World No. 1 and 2 in the field at Glen Abbey Golf Club right after a major, so golf fans may feel a little blessed this week. In fact, there are five players ranked in the Top 25 in the world coming into Canada this week in total.

Within the field, we’ll have a dozen hometown heroes including David Hearn, a Canadian who almost won his national Open Championship after taking a two-shot lead into the final day. As much as we love the story about Garrett Rank, a Canadian and NHL referee by day, we’re most likely going to sit him out this week.

In total, the field will consist of just over 150 players, including 35 who played at Royal Troon last week.

This Week’s Course Preview

Glen Abbey Golf Club measures in at 7,253 yards and plays as a par 72. The track will host this event for the 28th time, and has always presented a challenge, with significant elevation changes.

The back nine contains a number of holes known as the “Valley Holes,” which feature a tee shot elevated by more than 58 feet before coming up on three consecutive water-riddled holes. After 16, the elevation evens out, but 18 is no walk in the park. Remember 2000, when Tiger Woods hit one of the greatest fairway bunker shots of his career to make birdie for the victory?

Precision and scrambling are key indicators this week, but we’ll cover that more extensively in our Fantasy Notes section below.

Weather Forecast for Oakville, Ontario

The weather looks to be a relief from that of Royal Troon, so nothing much to worry about here.

Last week we advised picking a player during round one on No Halftime, seeing as how the playing conditions were ideal and the best for the week. If you took Phil, you most likely rode his record-tying 63 to an easy payday!

Last Year’s Results from the RBC Canadian Open

It took three consecutive birdies to get the job done, but once it all ended, Jason Day never looked back. The young Aussie drilled a a 22-footer on 18 that kept him one stroke ahead of Bubba Watson and two strokes ahead of Canadian David Hearn. Before that, his birdies on 16 and 17 moved him into the lead, and he held on from that point forward; the long putt on 18 was simply the nail in the coffin.

So can he repeat? He certainly could, but we need to analyze all of the players within the Top 4 in salary this week, because you don’t want to hitch your cart to the wrong horse this week.

Here again is was happened at Glen Abbey in 2015:

Where to Play Fantasy Golf for the RBC Canadian Open this Week

It might be an “off” week between the two big majors but there’s still plenty of fantasy golf to be had out there.  Remember, DraftKing’s last “Millionaire Maker” of the season is next week for the PGA Championship so this week is your last shot to win your way in with a Super Satellite.

This Week’s Fantasy Notes for the RBC Canadian Open

Here’s what we know this week: Glen Abbey caters well to the long ball hitters, and we’ve seen guys like Day, DJ and Bubba stand out on this course over the years. In 2015, Bubba led the field in Driving Distance (he finished in 2nd place) and Day wasn’t far behind off the tee. On the other hand, Day was ranked T72 in Driving Accuracy last year, so we know that isn’t a necessary stat to dominate this week for success. In 2013, DJ finished runner-up here, and we all know how he likes to beat up on  Par 72 courses like this one.

The bottom line is that Glen Abbey will feel like a walk in the park, especially for the Royal Troon spillover. Last year, this course yielded 82 eagles over the four days, which shows us that long ball hitters can rack up fantasy points all week with more chances to stick pins from 100 yards in.

We always analyze each player, not only with our GPFP indicators, but with the DraftKings point systems as well. For example, on a course that yielded the most birdies on any course since 2008, you need to stack your lineup with guys that make birdies and eagles. Sounds simple, and it is, you just need to put the work in and really crunch the stats—or as a Premium Member you can let us do it for you. Needless to say, certain players beat up on certain styles of courses better than other players in the field.

We’re going to run with a handful of lineups, and we’ll offer three sample rosters this week. One with our horse pick, one without, and one stacked with only mid-tier players.
