Fantasy Golf Picks, Odds, and Predictions for the Sanderson Farms Championship

Sanderson Farms Championship Fantasy Preview

The champagne corks will just be landing and the hangovers wearing off as the Sanderson Farms Championship restarts the 2021-22 season on Thursday.

It was a consummate Ryder Cup performance from Team America, who took control in the foursomes on Friday morning and never looked back – the 19-9 scoreline the heaviest win in the modern-day era of the event.

The US players looked completely comfortable in each other’s company, and there was even a hug between Brooks and Bryson during the celebratory presentation – admittedly, it did look rather awkward and staged….there’s more to come from that rivalry yet, you suspect.

As you would have guessed, the absolute vast majority of the Ryder Cup competitors have decided to take the week off – it’s probably for the best looking at the bleary-eyed Americans after their celebrations and the rather emotional response of many of the European players from their hammering, and so it’s a rather thin field that heads to Jackson, Mississippi for the Sanderson Farms Championship.

Boom! What a way to kick off a new season: with a Max Homa win!

Last week we jumped out of the gate with Max on our “must-pick” board and for a very good reason.  In case you missed it, here is what we said about Homa heading into the tournament:

It would be fair to say that the second half of the 2020-21 season did not go to plan for Max Homa, but a couple of weeks to reset and work on his game behind closed doors should hopefully pay dividends.

The Californian landed the second PGA TOUR title of a blossoming career and served up five other top-10s, and that confirms his growing reputation in the sport.

Perhaps a return to home soil will work like a charm, given that he won the Genesis Invitational on Californian turf, and his long hitting, precise approach game is ideally suited for Silverado.

Along with Homa, our Top Pick, Will Zalatoris, finished T11, while Maverick McNealy, one of our Tuesday Sleeper Report picks, finished solo-second.

It’s nice to see a 1-2 bang out of the gate. Now onto the Sanderson Farms…

Sanderson Farms Championship Field

Only one Ryder Cup participant will tee it up this week – Sergio Garcia, who happens to be the defending champion here. Having been one of the few Europeans to emerge with any credit from last week’s disappointment, it will be interesting to see how the Spaniard fares.

Zach Johnson, who was a vice captain to Steve Stricker at Whistling Straits, will unfurl his clubs at the Country Club of Jackson, while Will Zalatoris – who may well even fancy his chances of being on the American team in 2023 – will showcase his talents as well.

Otherwise, the head of the market is occupied by TOUR winners or those who at least appear to have a win in them – Sam Burns, Sungjae Im, Corey Conners, Si-Woo Kim and Mito Pereira.

There’s stack of former Sanderson Farms champions in the field, and that’s an eclectic band that includes Sebastian Munoz, Ryan Armour, Bill Haas, Scott Stallings and Cody Gribble, to name but a few.

This Week’s Course Preview

There are few golf courses on the PGA TOUR that really offer no insight or profile of player that might thrive on its real estate, but the Country Club of Jackson is right up there on that front.

Any layout that boasts Cameron Champ and Ryan Armour as previous champions gives you an idea that anyone can thrive here, and while driving distance is considered a useful weapon here this is a course where a hot putter will likely get the job done.

So why is CC of Jackson so open to all players? Quite simply, it’s because there is little to fear from tee to green. While this is a decent stretch at 7,460 yards for its Par 72, much of that extra distance is spread over the four Par 5s – so as long as you are decent from 250 yards and in, you can score at Jackson.

With minimal rough and only the odd bunker and slice of water here and there, there really is little to worry the players – even the tree-lines are pretty sparse.

Generous width fairways provide ample room for all but the most wayward of tee shots, and the Bermuda greens – while tending to run slick – are receptive enough and reward the smoothest of putting strokes.

So it’s off to flat-stick-shootout-land we go this week….

Weather Forecast for Jackson, MS

Bettors and DFS gamers are advised to keep a close eye on the weather forecast this week – it really could make a significant difference.

Based on that initial forecast, there is rain around on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday – if that falls in a decent quantity, it could soften the ground and give the longer hitters a significant advantage, which is certainly something to ponder.

Of the four playing days, Thursday is the outlier – scattered thunderstorms a potential stumbling block to a full day’s play.

After that, the early predictions suggest the picture should become much brighter, with sunny spells and cloud and top temperatures of 86˚F. Happily, the wind shouldn’t get up beyond single digits mph.

JACKSON WEATHER

Last Year’s Results from the Sanderson Farms Championship

Sergio Garcia ended a three-and-a-half year wait for a PGA TOUR trophy at the Sanderson Farms Championship last year.

At a layout where putting control has been important through the years, maybe we could be a little surprised to see the Spaniard – not the most consistent with the flat stick – getting into the winner’s circle, but when you can hit irons as well as he can then sometimes that’s all that matters.

It certainly did on the 72nd hole, where Garcia stiffed a sublime approach to two feet, and that tap-in birdie ultimately was enough to secure him the title from a fast-finishing Peter Malnati, who carded a 63 on the Sunday.

Garcia was in a three-way tie for the lead heading into the final round, and as he powered on those who had joined him at the top of the leaderboard – Cameron Davis and J.T. Poston – quickly surrendered their position at the summit.

Sergio Garcia shoots 6-under 66 | Round 3 | Sanderson Farms 2020

In the third round of the 2020 Sanderson Farms Championship, Sergio Garcia shot a 6-under 66 to get to 14-under for the tournament. SUBSCRIBE to PGA TOUR now: http://pgat.us/vBxcZSh The PGA TOUR heads to the Country Club of Jackson for the Sanderson Farms Championship.

Where to Play Fantasy Golf for the Sanderson Farms Championship this Week

There is a level of variance to events like the Sanderson Farms Championship, where more than normal we are putting some stock in those who blow hot and cold with the putter. So, treading carefully, here’s a couple of contests to try.

  • PGA $400k Resurgence: The winner banks $100k for taking top spot here, but with the top 10,000 entries banking a profit – and multi-entry allowed – there’s plenty to sink your teeth into.
  • PGA $150k Drive the Green: Multi-entry may be the way to go this week with such volatility in the field, and so here’s a $5 entry game where you can try multiple lineups and attempt to take down the $50k top prize.

This Week’s Fantasy Notes for the Sanderson Farms Championship

Let’s make no bones about it – it’s a tough draft this week in a weak-field event where anybody with a hot hand on the greens has half a chance.

At the same time, you can’t completely rule out premium ball-strikers either – as Garcia showed 12 months ago, and as ever at the Sanderson Farms Championship that leaves us with quite the quandary.

But as we peruse the 2020 leaderboard, and remind ourselves of winners past in this event, other than the occasional outlier we note that longer hitters do tend to thrive in Jackson, and so that has to be the basis of our attack.

Garcia, Poston, Bradley, Davis, Ventura, McCumber, Hoffman – all are 300+ yard merchants off the peg, and all finished inside the top-10 here last term.

Of course, we do prefer those who can make a putt or two – it always helps in these birdie-fests, and so those with previous on slick Bermuda greens are preferred.

Other than that, there’s not a huge amount to report – hit it long, nudge your approach close enough and have a great week with the flat stick….it’s certainly not rocket science, anyway.

Top 5 Picks/Odds to Win the Sanderson Farms Championship

Top Tier Pick #1:

Sam Burns (Odds: 16/1, FPPG: 70.5, GPFP: 56.37 Salary: $11,000)

While a record of MC-45-3-43 might not scream as such, the Country Club of Jackson is a golf course made in heaven for Sam Burns.

He will have plenty of room off the tee to hit his bombs without fear of being penalized by a hazard, and then he can let his short-range approach skills really shine.

And as a top-10 putter on Tour – literally, he ranked ninth for SG: Putting last season, Burns has the chops to make the most of the opportunities he creates for himself.

Since winning his maiden PGA TOUR title at the Valspar Championship (on fast Bermuda greens no less), the 25-year-old has finished T2 at the FedEx St Jude and solo eighth at the BMW Championship – he is fast becoming one of the best in the business when conditions suit.

Key Stats:

  • Birdie Average – 5th
  • SG: Putting – 9th
  • Driving Distance – 33rd
Top Tier Pick #2:

Cameron Tringale (Odds: 35/1, FPPG: 67.8, GPFP: 85.47 Salary: $9,400)

With quality throughout the bag, we’re expecting Cameron Tringale to really push on in the months ahead and break out of this top-30 rut and become a genuine title contender.

Six of his last eight starts have yielded that return, and so we have to assume that in a weaker field than the norm he will kick on – famous last words, of course.

Averaging 300.9 yards off the tee last term, Tringale has the length to thrive at the Country Club of Jackson, and both his approach play and putting are such that he can convert low scores – he ranked top 50 on TOUR for both SG: Approach and Putting last term.

It’s all there for Tringale….now he’s got to go out and make it happen for himself.

Key Stats:

  • Birdie Average – 35th
  • SG: Approach – 41st
  • SG: Putting – 42nd
Mid-Tier Pick #1:

Keith Mitchell (Odds: 80/1, FPPG: 53.4, GPFP: 42.73 Salary: $7,800)

It’s a bombers course, it’s Bermuda and so it’s Keith Mitchell on the shortlist.

It’s a bit harsh to label big Keith as one-dimensional as that, but there’s no secret that he is at his best when there’s room off the tee and when he’s putting on his preferred surface.

His maiden PGA TOUR triumph came on Bermuda over at the Honda Classic, and the majority of his twelve top-10 finishes have come in similar conditions too.

In decent form at the tailend of last season with top-10s at the 3M Open and NORTHERN TRUST, Mitchell is a must play this week.

Key Stats:

  • SG: Off-the-Tee – 11th
  • Approaches from 225-250 yards – 16th
  • Birdie Average – 67th
Mid-Tier Pick #2:

David Lipsky (Odds: 125/1, FPPG: 66.1, GPFP: 77.94 Salary: $7,200)

A full place on the PGA TOUR has been a long time coming for David Lipsky, who has travelled the world in search of his chance to step up to the top grade.

A winner in Asian and in Europe, Lipsky tried his luck on the Korn Ferry Tour last season and it was a move that paid dividends – a winner of the TPC San Antonio Challenge, he also lost out in another event in a playoff, so clearly he has that winning bug.

An excellent driver of the ball that was also regarded as a reliable putter over on the European Tour, Lipsky can certainly make his mark on his native tour this term.

Key Stats:

  • SG: Putting – 15th
  • SG: Off-the-Tee – 15th
  • Birdie Average – 20th
Low-Tier Pick:

Greyson Sigg (Odds: 125/1, FPPG: 74.0, GPFP: 59.20 Salary: $6,900)

A two-time winner on the Korn Ferry Tour in 2020, Greyson Sigg has the credentials we’re looking for this week.

It’s noteworthy that one of those came in Knoxville, which hints at comfort in this part of the world, and given that he resides in Georgia he will have played plenty of golf on Bermuda greens.

Standing 5ft 7in and barely 180lbs, Sigg is a pocket dynamo that hits the ball a long way, and with a steady hand on the greens he could be one to watch this season – he’ll be looking to follow up his T30 at the Fortinet Championship in strong style here.

Key Stats:

  • Birdie Average – 35th
  • SG: Approach – 57th
  • SG: Putting – 60th

Sleeper Pick for the Sanderson Farms Championship

Taylor Pendrith (Odds: 70/1, FPPG: 76.2, GPFP: 60.97 Salary: $7,800)

The early months of the season are an excellent chance to see how the Korn Ferry Tour graduates step up to the plate at the elite level.

On this particular golf course, we’re expecting big things from Taylor Pendrith – he has the weaponry to thrive at the Country Club of Jackson.

Huge off the tee and with a solid putting stroke, the Canadian caught the eye on the KFT, and while his lack of trophies at that tier is a concern, there are other Korn Ferry stars that have gone on to win at PGA TOUR level without first tasting the ultimate success on the next rung down.

Key Stats:

  • SG: Off-the-Tee – 2nd
  • SG: Putting – 37th
  • Birdie Average – 46th

Alternative Sleeper Pick for the Sanderson Farms Championship

Wyndham Clark (Odds: 175/1, FPPG: 51.4, GPFP: 50.33 Salary: $6,400)

A player who has the potential to out-perform his betting odds on a week-by-week basis is Wyndham Clark, who has far more game than his 175/1 price suggests.

Of course, he’s better at courses that suit his bomb-and-gouge playing style, and to all intents and purposes that is the profile that the Country Club of Jackson supports.

Huge off the tee and decent from 100 yards and in, Clark served up a solid T30 at the Fortinet Championship – much needed after a horror end to the 2020-21 campaign.

Key Stats:

  • SG: Off-the-Tee – 7th
  • Scoring Average – 29th
  • SG: Putting – 88th
