Fantasy Golf Picks, Odds, and Predictions for the 2024 Wyndham Championship

Wyndham Championship Fantasy Preview

With sport’s great champions like Simone Biles and Noah Lyles, there’s just an inevitability that they’re going to pull out their best performances on the biggest of stages.

Golf has its own Mr Inevitable in Scottie Scheffler, and perhaps we shouldn’t be surprised anymore when he delivers a remarkable final round to win a tournament.

Of course, on Sunday it was more than just a mere golf tournament. Scheffler’s outstanding final round of 62 – in the context of how hard Le Golf National played, it really was an incredible 18 holes – saw him win the gold medal at the Olympic Games; his tears as the Star-Spangled Banner played evidence of just how much this event means to the players.

Yes, the likes of Jon Rahm and Tommy Fleetwood folded, but Scheffler still took gold, rather than it being handed to him – his final score of -19 was an Olympic record at a Le Golf National stretch that was far from easy to overcome.

There’s no gold medals on the line at the Wyndham Championship this week, but there’s still plenty to play for – this is the final regulation PGA TOUR event prior to the FedEx Cup triple-header finale.

Only the top 70 players in the standings will make it to the St Jude next week, so it’s very much go time for the bubble boys and those with aspirations of shooting up the leaderboard in North Carolina.

Last Week’s Results

Last event we ended up with a unique sleeper pick finishing in solo second.

That’s right, Max Greyserman was our pick last week and for a good reason.

Here’s what we had to say about Max heading into last week:

“With a few more nights rest on home soil, Greyserman should be reenergized. And that’s a good thing ahead of a tilt at the 3M Open, because his ball-striking has been good lately to go with season-long excellence on the greens. With two top-10s in 2024, Greyserman clearly has plenty of upside in conditions that should suit.”

His solo second was exactly what DraftKins roster players needed to boost their earnings last week.

Wyndham Championship Field

The lure of the Olympic Games for those that qualified, and the logistical challenges of getting back to the United States from France for a Thursday start, means that the field for the Wyndham Championship is on the weak side – no surprise, given that many of the big guns have already secured their FedEx Cup status.

Even so, 21 of the world’s top-50 ranked players will tee it up at Sedgefield Country Club, headlined by former British Open champion Brian Harman, a two-time winner this year in Robert MacIntyre, and world number 19 Sungjae Im.

The likes of Akshay Bhatia, Cameron Young, and Keegan Bradley will be hoping for a big performance to cement their likely qualification for the TOUR Championship, while recent British Open combatants Billy Horschel, Shane Lowry, and Justin Rose will have a similar idea in mind.

Lucas Glover will return to try to defend the title he won here 12 months ago.

This Week’s Course Preview

Sedgefield Country Club is unique on the PGA TOUR these days: it’s a course that genuinely offers an advantage to fairway-finding plodders, over those favoring tee box ballistics.

That’s perhaps because the rough is left fairly juicy at this parklands track, with the smallish Bermuda greens also offering an edge to those hitting their approaches from the short grass.

A tree-lined Par 70 measuring 7,131 yards, Sedgefield doesn’t play host to a huge number of bunkers, while water is in play on just six holes. So the main difference-maker is driving accuracy and having a strong week on the greens.

Donald Ross was on design duties at Sedgefield – he of East Lake and Detroit GC fame, and the former is just one of a number of positive course correlations. More on those later.

The 2023 edition of the Wyndham Championship was the perfect microcosm of this event, with the players trading birdies – Glover made 24 in all – on the scorable holes, which are headlined by the Par 5s at five and 15; these are eagle chances for those who hit long and straight, measuring 529 and 545 yards respectively.

But the shorter hitters can lay up their second shot and leave themselves with a simple approach in for birdie, while the other easy holes on the real estate – a quartet of Par 4s measuring 375-416 yards – also leave short approaches into the flag.

Three lengthy Par 4s – measuring 486, 505, and 507 yards – play as Sedgefield’s toughest assignments.

Weather Forecast for Greensboro, NC

The weather is not looking too promising in Greensboro this week.

There’s a heap of rain in the forecast, starting from Tuesday and running all the way through until Saturday. And while it’s hard to make a prediction of how much will fall and when exactly, it seems a safe bet to suggest that Sedgefield will be hit with the wet stuff this week.

The wind will be up too, particularly on Thursday and Friday at 15mph and 13mph respectively, so conditions will be far from ideal.

At least it will be reasonably warm – 82 degrees being something like the week’s average – but otherwise its umbrellas and rain jackets, rather than sunglasses and shorts, in Greensboro.

GREENSBORO WEATHER

Last Year’s Results from the Wyndham Championship

It was a feast of low scoring at the Wyndham Championship in 2023, with six players – Russell Henley, Billy Horschel, Lucas Glover, Byeong Hun An, Brendon Todd, and Adam Svensson – all at double-digits under par at the halfway stage.

Three of the half-dozen – Horschel, Glover, and Henley – kicked on during Saturday’s third round, finding themselves clear of the rest at -18, -18, and -17 respectively.

It was a horror show for Henley during the final 18 holes – he didn’t make a single birdie until the eighth hole, and then dramatically bogeyed three in a row through 16-18 to end his title chances.

Horschel also struggled in the spotlight, and while Byeong Hun An was able to catapult up into T2 with a round of 67, it was Glover who would not be denied – his quiet round of three birdies and just one bogey was enough to consolidate top spot by two strokes; he would then go on to win the St Jude Championship a week later too.

Where to Play Fantasy Golf for this Week’s Wyndham Championship

This is, in theory, the last chance to play a full field DFS event on the PGA TOUR; only 70 players will qualify for the St Jude next week. As such, this is as good a time as any to get your tanks on the lawn.

  • GOLF TOUR $300k Drive the Green: For the lower-tier budget of $5 per turn, you can take your shot at the $50k top prize in this contest – the top 135 teams will land a minimum of $100.
  • GOLF TOUR $50k Dogleg: Given that we have a very precise profile of the kind of player that can thrive at Sedgefield, there’s plenty of value in giving a single-entry contest a try this week – this $33 entry game pays a top prize of $5k, with only 1,766 teams in the mix.

This Week’s Fantasy Notes

In a sport that has become obsessed with distance and ball speed in the modern era, it’s refreshing to return to tracks like Sedgefield where a completely different skillset is required.

In the past five seasons, the winners here have been Glover, Tom Kim, Kevin Kisner, Jim Herman, and J.T. Poston – a quintet of players whose most common shared trait is an ability to find fairways consistently.

Those that have finished solo second or T2 in that timeframe – who include Henley, Sungjae Im, Si-Woo Kim, Kevin Na, and Webb Simpson – tie that trend together nicely, so simply drafting half-dozen accurate drivers, who are in form and have a sure hand with the flatstick, is a solid-enough strategy.

Of course, we can take things a little deeper in our analysis. East Lake is a useful correlation due to its Donald Ross connection and required skillset, but not many of this field make it to the TOUR Championship each year – rendering the link somewhat redundant.

So instead, let’s focus on short, tight, tree-lined courses. The Sony Open offers plenty of clues to success at Sedgefield, while TPC Sawgrass (PLAYERS Championship), Colonial (Charles Schwab), TPC River Highlands (Travelers Championship), and Muirfield Village (Memorial Tournament) all offer some useful pointers too.

But its fairway finders, solid putters, and Par 4 birdie-makers that are most of interest for our draft.

Top 5 Picks/Odds to Win the Wyndham Championship

Top Tier Pick # 1

Sungjae Im (Odds: 18/1, FPPG: 67.2, Salary: $10,700)

A player with two PGA TOUR wins in 176 starts wouldn’t normally float our boat as a top-tier pick.

But that undervalues Sungjae Im’s incredible consistency: here’s a guy who has finished inside the top-10 in 44 of those 176 appearances, for a hit rate of around 25%. That really is outstanding.

Of the PGA TOUR’s layouts, Sedgefield is amongst those that suit the Korean best. He was T2 here in 2022, and was one of just eleven players to make 20 or more birdies in the Wyndham Championship last year on his way to T14.

T9 at Sedgefield in 2020 and T6 in 2019, where he fired a round of 62, this could well be Im’s favorite stop-off on the PGA TOUR.

Key Stats:

  • Par 4 Birdie or Better Leaders – 33rd
  • Proximity to Hole – 38th
  • Driving Accuracy – 45th

Top Tier Pick #2

Brian Harman (Odds: 35/1, FPPG: 68.8, Salary: $9,300)

It’s a surprise to see Brian Harman so roundly discarded by the sportsbooks and DFS price-makers this week.

The left-hander finished T60 in his British Open defense, but prior to that he was a respectable T21 at the Scottish Open, T9 at the correlating Travelers Championship – where he lost strokes to the field on the greens, and T21 at the wholly unsuitable Pinehurst at the U.S. Open.

His record at Sedgefield is a mixed bag, but T6 here in 2019 and T27 in 2020 – with a round of 71 in there – offers a handy glimpse of what Harman can do.

As accurate as they come, with a much-improved approach game and solidity on the greens, Harman won’t mind a bit of wind and rain – as his win at the 2023 British Open attests.

Key Stats:

  • Driving Accuracy – 27th
  • SG: Putting – 31st
  • SG: Approach – 38th

Mid-Tier Pick #1

Aaron Rai (Odds: 40/1, FPPG: 70.2, Salary: $8,800)

If you take his T75 at the British Open out of the equation, Aaron Rai’s recent form is exemplary.

Three top-10s in a row on the PGA TOUR, which were powered by tee-to-green solidity and much better form on the greens, reveal a player knocking on the door of his first win on American soil – which makes this $8,800 price point something of a headscratcher.

Rai bears all the hallmarks of the classic Sedgefield champion: accurate off the tee, quality through the bag on approach, and a reliable scrambler/chipper when needs must.

But it’s his recent putting improvements that really catch the eye: if he putts like he did in June and into July, Rai is a genuine contender for silverware this week.

Key Stats:

  • Driving Accuracy – 3rd
  • SG: Approach – 8th
  • Scoring Average (adjusted) – 8th

Mid-Tier Pick #2

Adam Svensson (Odds: 90/1, FPPG: 53.5, Salary: $7,400)

One player that might just favor the switch to Bermuda greens this week is Adam Svensson, who seems to save his best putting efforts for these surfaces.

And it’s a good job, because it’s that flatstick which continues to hold the Canadian back – otherwise, he’s a tidy and accurate campaigner, which is exactly what you need to be at Sedgefield.

Rock solid from tee to green, Svensson can actually contend when putting above average – as he did here 12 months ago, incidentally, with a fantastic +1.34 return with the flatstick on the field on his way to T7, where he struck the ball beautifully too.

Key Stats:

  • Driving Accuracy – 37th
  • SG: Approach – 40th
  • Total Birdies – 41st

Low-Tier Pick

Doug Ghim (Odds: 75/1, FPPG: 57.8, Salary: $7,300)

From tee-to-green, Doug Ghim is the perfect fit for Sedgefield. Accurate off the tee, his laser-focussed approach play enables him to hold these smaller-than-average greens.

But putting remains an achilles heel, and he won’t compete for PGA TOUR titles until he can figure out the flatstick.

Maybe we can take some heart from the fact that the last few times Ghim putted well came on the Florida Swing on Bermuda greens; it could be the difference-maker for such a smart ball-striking talent.

Ghim made 21 birdies here last year – only five players in the field made more. Yes, the bogeys flowed too, but there’s just a few little breadcrumbs to suggest he can feast well on Sedgefield this week.

Key Stats:

  • SG: Approach – 7th
  • Driving Accuracy – 12th
  • Scoring Average (adjusted) – 32nd

Sleeper Pick for the Wyndham Championship

Andrew Putnam (Odds: 120/1, FPPG: 62.4, Salary: $7,000)

So short is Andrew Putnam off the tee that there are few courses on the PGA TOUR where he can truly contend.

In fact, it must be such a grind even keeping his tour card, knowing that most players will be knocking it 20+ yards further down the fairway, so when chances like Sedgefield come along, Putnam has to take them.

The good news for his fans is that he has been playing better golf of late. T19 at the 3M Open and T21 at the Barracuda Championship are a respectable platform on which to build, particularly as Putnam put up really strong approach play numbers at both.

Although generally a good putter wherever he goes, Putnam does seem to save his very best for Bermuda greens too.

Key Stats:

  • Driving Accuracy – 25th
  • SG: Putting – 32nd
  • Par 4 Birdie or Better Leaders – 33rd

Alternative Sleeper Pick for the Wyndham Championship

Carson Young (Odds: 200/1, FPPG: 58.3, Salary: $6,600)

On the face of it, drafting Carson Young looks a tad foolish.

He missed the cut at the low-grade ISCO Championship and Barracuda Championship, before finishing dead last of those that made the cut at the 3M Open.

But none of those events rewarded fairway finding – Young’s specialty, so he should enjoy a trip to a layout that will give him full value for his expertise off the tee.

Because when he does get things right, the 29-year-old can deliver for his drafters – T5 at the John Deere Classic in July, T14 at the Canadian Open in June is fine stuff from a sleeper pick.

Key Stats:

  • Driving Accuracy – 7th
  • Proximity to the Hole – 13th
  • Par 4 Birdie or Better Leaders – 27th
