Fantasy Golf Picks, Odds, and Predictions for the 2025 Genesis Invitational
The 2025 Genesis Invitational Fantasy Preview
On an evening in which the Eagles dismantled the Chiefs at the Super Bowl, Thomas Detry would win his maiden elite-level title at one of golf’s hardest venues to get over the line… a reminder that, in sport, any outcome is possible.
The Belgian is a supreme talent – he was knocking on the door of the world’s top 50 without ever having won on the PGA or DP World Tour, but for one reason or another he hadn’t been able to parlay his ability into silverware.
A choker? Not a bit of it. Detry started Sunday with a five-shot lead and ended it with a seven-stroke margin of victory, closing out comfortably in the most raucous atmosphere in golf… and against a world-class field, into the bargain.
Impossible? No. Improbable? Certainly. Detry, a 90/1 outsider with the sportsbooks, produced the best ball-striking performance of his entire career, from a raw, strokes gained perspective. His previous best in that regard in 2025 so far was a paltry +0.17 at the Farmers.
So are we looking at Thomas Detry 2.0? We’ll get another chance to find out this week, as the 32-year-old is in the field for the Genesis Invitational.
Last Week’s Fantasy Results
Our best pick last week was our top Tuesday Sleeper Report pick, Maverick McNealy.
The young gun fired a 63-69 for a Top 9 finish.
Genesis Invitational Field
It’s Signature Event time once more, bringing with it the quality of field you would expect.
Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy will renew acquaintances, while the likes of Collin Morikawa, Hideki Matsuyama, Ludvig Aberg, and Wyndham Clark add further depth.
Sepp Straka, Detry, and Nick Taylor – currently in the FedEx Cup top five – will be looking to consolidate their positions, while Justin Thomas, Sungjae Im, and co will be hoping to improve upon their fine starts to the season.
Harris English is in the field courtesy of his Farmers Insurance Open win at Torrey Pines just a few weeks ago, while Jordan Spieth – who played beautifully at TPC Scottsdale – is in on a sponsor’s exemption.
And then there’s a certain Tiger Woods, the tournament host and eight-time winner at Torrey Pines. This is no easy place to play golf, technically and physically, so it will be fascinating to see what the maestro can produce at such a happy hunting ground.
This Week’s Course Preview
Ordinarily, we’d be off to the Riviera Country Club in the Pacific Palisades for the Genesis Invitational.
But the Californian fires, and their subsequent damage, mean that Riviera will take a sabbatical in 2025, with the South Course at Torrey Pines selected as the temporary replacement.
This layout hosts three of the four rounds that the players tackle at the Farmers Insurance Open, and this is a long, physically demanding slog, playing around 7,665 yards for its Par 72 (officially the longest course on the PGA TOUR).
The greens are on the small side too, with a Poa Annua/Bentgrass mix enabling course officials to get the putting surfaces smoother and faster than pure Poa – they were running at around 13 on the stimpmeter for the 2025 Farmers. What’s more, the rough here just a few weeks ago was said to be around four inches long… will they keep it so for the Signature Event this week?
Although winning scores at the Farmers tend to be in the teens under par, much of that mark is made on the easier North Course. For context, the South Course hosted the 2021 U.S. Open, which was won by Jon Rahm with a score of -6, whole Harris English’s winning tally at the 2025 Farmers of -8 reveals just how tough conditions get when the wind blows.
Indeed, English lifted the trophy despite a tournament driving accuracy of just 38.1% and a GIR percentage of a lowly 57.4% – surely some kind of PGA TOUR record.
Three of the four Par 3s are 200+ yards in length (two of them over 220 yards), while the 621-yard thirteenth is one of the toughest Par 5 holes you’re likely to see outside of the majors.
At the 2025 Farmers, the two hardest holes were the fourth and twelfth; Par 4s measuring 490 and 505 yards respectively. If you hadn’t got the message yet, the secret to taming Torrey Pines is supreme length!
Weather Forecast for San Diego, CA
Being able to hit the ball a long way is helpful at Torrey Pines, and that sentiment will hold plenty of weight once again this week if the early weather forecast holds.
There’s rain around in La Jolla, with a dousing expected on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday as per the early predictions.
Temperatures are down too, with 60-64 degrees expected across the four days, with something of a split from Thursday and Friday into the weekend.
The current forecast suggests the opening two days will see the worst of the weather, with rain and wind speeds of around 15mph. Things should improve over the weekend, with sunnier spells and the wind dying off to around 9mph.
SAN DIEGO WEATHER
Last Year’s Results from Genesis Invitational
The defending champion this week is Hideki Matsuyama, who won the 2024 Genesis at Riviera off the back of a scintillating final round.
The Japanese ace was a full six shots behind 54-hole leader Patrick Cantlay heading into Sunday, but as he and the likes of Will Zalatoris and Xander Schauffele floundered, Matsuyama pounced.
Bogey free and with nine birdies on his card, Matsuyama’s closing 62 was enough for him to win by a cosy three-shot advantage.
And for context, the last time we say Torrey Pines South was at the Farmers in January, with Harris English outlasting the field in breezy conditions to win by a single shot from Sam Stevens.
Where to Play Fantasy Golf for this Week’s Genesis Invitational
With a 72-man field and a cut to 50 at the halfway stage, it’s harder for DFS gamers to make their mark in the Genesis Invitational than it is for other full-field events. So, it’s time to delve boldly into the single-entry contests once more…
- GOLF TOUR $30k Caddie: Perhaps the pick of the $5 entry games comes in the shape of this contest, which has a limited 7,134 field battling it out for the top prize of $3,000. The top 20% of players will all at least double their money.
- GOLF TOUR $10k Dogleg: If you really want to increase your chances of a win this week, you can trim down the field of opponents to just 352 in this contest. For $33 entry, you’ll scoop a minimum of $50 for finishing in the top 84, with the winner landing $1,000.
This Week’s Fantasy Notes for Genesis Invitational
Harris English’s win at the Farmers just a few weeks ago was highly instructive.
This is a guy who has three U.S. Open top-ten finishes to his name – including solo third when Torrey Pines hosted the major in 2021. English is the equivalent of a golfing deviant, getting the most enjoyment from his game when conditions are at their toughest.
It’s interesting too to note that English has a fine record at Torrey Pines period, with a trio of top-three finishes and a T8 on his ledger. Course form, and an ability to guts out a score, will count for plenty this week.
The 2024 champion at Torrey Pines, Matthieu Pavon, has enjoyed some of his best paydays in golf in touch conditions, with a solo fifth at the devilish Pinehurst (U.S. Open 2024) and T12 at The Masters.
Incredibly, nine of the last ten Farmers Insurance Open champions have a top-five to their name at either the U.S. Open or The Masters, and in many cases at both.
So, it’s all about the classy operators that hit the ball a long way this week…

Top 5 Picks/Odds to Win the Genesis Invitational
Top Tier Pick # 1
Collin Morikawa (Odds: 14/1, FPPG: 95.6, Salary: $10,000)
There’s an easy case to be made for Scottie and Rory this week; particularly the latter, who was in irresistible form over at Pebble Beach a few weeks ago.
Either might win this week, of course, but with some potentially dodgy weather – and an idiosyncratic track at Torrey Pines, maybe this is an opportunity to evade the chalk, hedge our risk and spread our salary cap around a little.
Which brings us to Collin Morikawa, who has finished no worse than T28 in 15 of his last 16 strokeplay starts. He’s ultra consistent, but winning is the thing when it comes to top-tier picks.
With two majors to his name at the age of 28, we know that Morikawa can beat the best – it’s his lack of activity that has prevented him from racking up many more victories; if he played more run-of-the-mill PGA TOUR events, he’d surely have more than six trophies in his cabinet.
Like a lot of the leading lights in this field, Morikawa has only made occasional visits to Torrey Pines. But two top-fives in his last three trips here, including T4 at the U.S. Open of 2021, suggests that this is a layout at which he can succeed.
Key Stats (2024):
- Scoring Average (Adjusted) – 3rd
- SG: Around-the-Green – 10th
- SG: Off-the-Tee – 19th
Top Tier Pick #2
Tommy Fleetwood (Odds: 35/1, FPPG: 100.6, Salary: $9,100)
If the weather is as horrid as suggested, Tommy Fleetwood will be a good player to have on side.
The Brit has three top-ten finishes in his home Open to his name, as well as solo second at the U.S. Open and T3 at The Masters. Fleetwood plays excellent golf when the conditions are at the toughest.
He’s finished no lower than T22 in each of his last eleven starts worldwide, which is a run that has included a silver medal at the Olympic Games and a pair of third-place finishes.
And here’s a bizarre, under-the-radar link. The DP World Tour’s Nedbank Challenge is played at a super-long layout in South Africa with Kikuyu rough (like Torrey Pines). Marc Leishman and Max Homa have won both the Nedbank and the Farmers, Alex Noren has won the Nedbank and finished second at Torrey Pines, while Justin Rose has won the Farmers and finished runner-up in the Nedbank.
Nicolai Hojgaard has finished second at both, while young Aldrich Potgieter should have won the 2024 Nedbank and was inside the top ten at the Farmers after 54 holes in January as a 400/1 shot.
Fleetwood, meanwhile, has won the Nedbank twice…
Key Stats (2024):
- SG: Tee-to-Green – 2nd
- Scrambling – 6th
- Scoring Average – 16th
Mid-Tier Pick #1
Jason Day (Odds: 40/1, FPPG: 88.1, Salary: $8,700)
Two wins. Three other top five finishes. A T7 and a T9.
It would be fair to conclude that Jason Day enjoys himself at Torrey Pines, and that information is even more pertinent when he heads to San Diego in such good form.
He finished T3 at the American Express, but more crucial here is the condition of his long game. In his last three PGA TOUR starts, Day has gained strokes on the field off the tee and on approach, which is indicative of where he’s at right now.
Combine that with his nearly always sharp short game, and repeated success putting on Poa Annua greens, Day has to be a major player this week.
Key Stats (2024):
- SG: Putting – 9th
- Par 4 Scoring Average – 26th
- Scrambling – 32nd
Mid-Tier Pick #2
Will Zalatoris (Odds: 50/1, FPPG: 84.3, Salary: $7,900)
At the time of writing this, Will Zalatoris was 50/1 with some sportsbooks and lower odds with others… hopefully his price holds.
The Californian’s career has been start-stop over the past couple of years due to his back surgery, but there’s been glimpses of a return to the form that saw him win the St Jude and lose in a playoff in the PGA Championship in a high quality 2022 campaign.
Zalatoris has three top-tens at The Masters and two top-tens at the U.S. Open, as well as finishes of second, seventh, and thirteenth at Torrey Pines. If his tee-to-green game pops as it has done at times in 2025, and he putts better on his ‘home’ Poa Annua greens, he could take another huge step forward in his career renaissance.
Key Stats (2024):
- Scrambling – 64th
- SG: Approach – 67th
- SG: Off-the-Tee – 76th
Low-Tier Pick
Adam Scott (Odds: 80/1, FPPG: 90.9, Salary: $7,500)
Experience can count for plenty at courses like Torrey Pines, and you wonder if the nous and the smooth swing of Adam Scott will come to the fore.
The Aussie isn’t somebody that necessarily leaps from the page these days, but there’s enough form in the tank to suggest that the 44-year-old can mix it with the world’s best still.
He was solo second at the Scottish Open in the summer, before parlaying that into T2 and T4 turns at the BMW Championship and TOUR Championship respectively.
There’s been a real renaissance in the approach play of Scott over the past few months, to go with his big booming drives and reliable short game, and second and tenth place finishes at Torrey Pines over a glimpse of what he’s capable of here.
Key Stats (2024):
- Scoring Average (Adjusted) – 7th
- SG: Putting – 27th
- SG: Off-the-Tee – 31st
Sleeper Pick for the Genesis Invitational
Gary Woodland (Odds: 125/1, FPPG: 72.7, Salary: $6,600)
Only time will tell if our theory this week, centring around the plausible link between Masters/U.S. Open success and suitability for a breezy Torrey Pines, has legs.
But if it does, Gary Woodland could become an intriguing sleeper pick. He’s a former U.S. Open champion, with another top-ten in that event to his credit, and finished T14 at The Masters in 2023.
That correlates with a mixed bag of a record at Torrey Pines, but two top-tens here – plus T12 and two other top-20s – at least hint that when Woodland arrives in San Diego with confidence, he can really perform at this layout.
With a formline of 21-22-16, there should be good vibes in the Woodland camp; particularly as his ball striking, which will do much of the heavy lifting at Torrey Pines, is in such excellent shape.
Key Stats (2024):
- Driving Distance – 11th
- SG: Approach – 47th
- Par 5 Birdie or Better Leaders – 72nd
Alternative Sleeper Pick for the Genesis Invitational
Justin Rose (Odds: 110/1, FPPG: 73.8, Salary: $6,400)
If scoring is tough again at Torrey Pines this week, simply hanging around and minimizing mistakes could be enough to contend.
That has been the hallmark of Justin Rose’s career as he ages gracefully, and it was that very tactic that saw him contend at the British Open in the summer, where he had to settle for a share of second place owing to Xander Schauffele’s brilliance.
Rose also tends to play at the same venues repeatedly, as we saw last time out at Pebble Beach, where he gained strokes on the field in every department in his T3 turn. Which brings us to Torrey Pines, where the Brit has won and compiled three other top-ten finishes.
Key Stats (2024):
- Putts Per Round – 37th
- Scrambling – 39th
- Driving Accuracy – 63rd
