In last week’s sleeper report, we pondered whether winning the pairs Zurich Classic would inspire Andrew Novak to glory at the Charles Schwab Challenge – as it had previously for Davis Riley.

And yet, hiding in plain sight, it was Novak’s playing partner that we should have been looking out for…

Ben Griffin, who lifted the Zurich Classic trophy alongside Novak back in April, hung tough amid an extraordinary putting display from Matti Schmid to claim his second PGA TOUR title – and his first as a solo player – of the season.

Schmid gained a whopping +8.65 strokes on the field putting at Colonial, and yet lost -1.73 on Sunday as his title challenge faltered.

Griffin, at one point five strokes clear of the field, then began to run aground on his back nine, missing fairways and greens and relying on scrambling and chipping to keep him in the hunt.

After playing his first two holes in -3, Griffin played his next 16 in +4… but was still able to cling on and win by one stroke from Schmid on a chaotic Sunday.

Missed GIR was the order of the day in round four at Colonial, and there might just be more of the same this week as the ever-challenging Muirfield Village plays host to the Memorial Tournament.

Last Week’s Fantasy Results

Last week our best picks were Novak (T11) and Kim (T18) but unfortunately no Griffin in our lineup.  The long shot came up strong last week and surprised us all!

The 2025 Memorial Tournament presented by Workday Field

We’re in Signature Event territory this week, which means the best of the best are in town… well, almost.

Rory McIlroy has decided to take the week off, but otherwise it’s a top-heavy field that will convene in Dublin, Ohio. Scottie Scheffler, Xander Schauffele, Justin Thomas, Collin Morikawa, and Ludvig Aberg amongst those making the trip. Hideki Matsuyama, Russell Henley, and Sepp Straka round out the OWGR top ten, while Patrick Cantlay and Viktor Hovland – amongst the former winners at Muirfield Village in the field – will be hoping for a repeat.

Ben Griffin has played his way into the field, while Novak – who was amongst the first onto the eighteenth green to celebrate with his friend on Sunday, would no doubt love to emulate his achievement.

This Week’s Course Preview

The Memorial Tournament was first played at Muirfield Village almost half-a-century ago, and the venue continues to challenge the players to this day.

Jack Nicklaus, who was on design duties at a layout now known affectionately as ‘Jack’s Place’, got it just right with Muirfield Village, which is long enough (7,560 yards for its Par 72) and peppered with enough hazards to continue to be relevant in 2025 and beyond.

As you would expect the Golden Bear, there’s a real emphasis on ball striking. You have to hit fairways – if you don’t, you’ll find yourself in rough that is generally left to grow long and juicy.

And then you have Bentgrass greens, which are on the small side and generally run at a fair old clip. Approaching these from long range, with many holes requiring a club down strategy off the tee, is not easy.

Sand (around 70 bunkers) and water (in play on 13 holes) provide further danger, so it’s perhaps no surprise that the winning score here in each of the last two years has been single digits under par.

In 2024, a whopping 13 of these holes averaged over par. In fact, of the five that played under par, four were Par 5s and the fifth is the near drivable 460-yard, Par 4 fourteenth.

Otherwise, it was a tough old week, with the quartet of Par 3s – three of which are in excess of 200 yards – proving difficult and the very last hole, a 480-yard Par 4, actually playing as the most challenging on the golf course with a birdie to bogey or worse ratio of 21:83.

Could we see the lead change hands on the very last hole come Sunday?

Weather Forecast for Dublin, OH

The possibility of some rain on Tuesday and Wednesday should lead into a drier start to the tournament on Thursday… albeit with a punishing wind coming in its stead.

If the early forecast is to be believed, the breeze could hit 18mph on Thursday and 15mph on Friday, with the possibility of gusts that are even stronger than that.

But the wind should ease in time for the weekend, with sunny spells and clouds intermingling for a top temperature of 69 degrees.

DUBLIN WEATHER

Last Year’s Results from The 2025 Memorial Tournament presented by Workday

Muirfield Village is a ball-striking paradise… no wonder the best ball-striker on the planet enjoyed himself so much.

Scottie Scheffler played his opening two rounds in 67 and 68; according to DataGolf, those were +5.99 and +5.22 better than the scoring average on Thursday and Friday.

And so the world number one was three clear at halfway, and while he scratched around a bit on Saturday in tougher conditions, Scheffler had still opened up a four-shot lead with a round to play.

Would he meander on Sunday? He certainly didn’t have things all his own way with two bogeys on the front nine and a birdie-free back nine, but nobody was able to take advantage – Collin Morikawa the closest, but ultimately to no avail.

Scheffler won by one with a score of -8, in a week that only eleven players finished under par.

Where to Play Fantasy Golf for this Week’s The 2025 Memorial Tournament presented by Workday

The DFS sites have upped their game accordingly for this Signature Event, which means big prize pools for some of their flagship contests.

  • GOLF TOUR $300k Drive the Green: The pick of the low-budget games, this Drive the Green contest serves up a $50k top prize and a $300k prize pool for your $5 entries.
  • GOLF TOUR $800k Summer Sand Trap: If you have a bigger budget to play with, this $25 entry contest certainly fits the bill… there’s a mammoth $200k jackpot to be won.

This Week’s Fantasy Notes for The 2025 Memorial Tournament presented by Workday

The pandemic enabled course officials at Muirfield Village to make a series of renovations to the layout, and since then the winning score of the Memorial Tournament has been creeping downwards.

Just breaking par was tough for a world-class field in 2024, and with funky winds forecast for at least the opening half of the event this year, Muirfield Village could play similarly challenging once more.

All of which points us towards those tough, scrambling weeks, where even the best pros are made to look human – it will be vital that are picks are comfortable in a breeze and solid around the greens.

Scheffler led the field in SG: Approach and GIR last year, while of the eleven players at T8 or better, five ranked top ten in the field for GIR and six for scrambling. Doing the basics well, and keeping bogey off the card, is worth plenty at Muirfield Village.

There are similarities between Muirfield Village and the host of the Charles Schwab Challenge, Colonial. In fact, in 2024, the 1-2-5 finishers at the Memorial had finished 2-4-5 at the Charles Schwab Challenge, with Sungjae Im also compiling top-ten finishes at both.

Course form also counts for plenty at Muirfield Village, while TPC Sawgrass – home of the PLAYERS Championship – has also been a useful indicator of success ain the Memorial before.

Top 5 Picks/Odds to Win The 2025 Memorial Tournament presented by Workday

Top Tier Pick # 1

Tommy Fleetwood (Odds: 25/1, FPPG: 78.5, Salary: $9,400)

Once again, we enter the twilight zone of ‘should we Scottie, or shouldn’t we?’

We did last year at the Memorial Tournament and he came up trumps for us, but that was at a salary of $12,500… a princely increase to $13,300, with strong winds forecast and the variance they bring, is perhaps a step too far.

By not drafting Scottie, we can circumnavigate the chalk in a potentially tough week, weather wise, and build a more balanced roster – in fact, we’ve got a stack of mid-range guys here who, combined, can perform to a level much greater than the sum of their parts.

Now, you’ll be thinking ‘but Tommy Fleetwood doesn’t win… how can he be a top-tier pick?’ But the truth is that the Brit has won around the world in conditions like those we’re expecting this week, and so this could be an excellent opportunity for him to break his duck.

It’s easy to underrate players like Fleetwood due to his quietly spoken style, but this is a guy that has gained strokes on the field ball-striking in 20 of his last 21 starts – a run that encapsulates two majors, four Signature Events, a PLAYERS Championship, and an Olympic Games.

As crucially, he loves playing in the wind and has fantastic hands around the greens… don’t discount Fleetwood this week.

Key Stats:

  • Scoring Average (adjusted) – 6th
  • SG: Approach – 11th
  • SG: Around-the-Green – 17th

Top Tier Pick #2

Corey Conners (Odds: 30/1, FPPG: 76.5, Salary: $9,100)

Corey Conners is another that might not cry out as a top-tier pick, but the Canadian is playing the golf of his life right now… doing everything but win.

Since the start of March, Conners has finished outside the top-20 only once, delivering stacks of value to his DFS owners. Four of his last eight outings have yielded top tens – including solo third at a Signature Event (the Arnold Palmer Invitational), T6 at the PLAYERS, and T8 at The Masters.

He may not be a household name, but Conners is playing some of the best golf on the PGA TOUR right now.

Key Stats:

  • Greens in Regulation – 9th
  • Driving Accuracy – 11th
  • Scoring Average (adjusted) – 25th

Mid-Tier Pick #1

Shane Lowry (Odds: 33/1, FPPG: 71.0, Salary: $8,700)

Comfortable in the wind and with educated hands around the greens, Shane Lowry is another ideal fit should the wind pick up at Muirfield Village.

It’s a surprise that the Irishman only has one top-ten and two other top-20s to his name here, but he’ll be looking to build upon that this week as he heads into Ohio in fine form.

A cold putting week saw Lowry miss the cut at the PGA Championship, but prior to that there’s a pair of second-place finishes in Signature Events, solo seventh at the Arnold Palmer Invitational, and T20 at the PLAYERS.

If he can heat up on the greens, Lowry is a danger this week.

Key Stats:

  • SG: Approach – 6th
  • Scoring Average (adjusted) – 11th
  • SG: Around-the-Green – 18th

Mid-Tier Pick #2

Si-Woo Kim (Odds: 40/1, FPPG: 68.1, Salary: $8,300)

T8 at the PGA Championship, T8 at the RBC Heritage, T15 at the CJ CUP, T17 at the Truist Championship.

Si-Woo Kim has the form profile of a player that could take a run at one of these events soon, and even his turn at the correlating Charles Schwab Challenge was captivating – after a disastrous opening round of 73, he made the cut with 64 on Friday and, all told, beat the day’s scoring average in three of his four rounds.

His formline at Muirfield Village – 15-4-13-9-18 – is indicative of a player that loves this property, and given Si-Woo’s form of late, he is a serious contender this week.

Key Stats:

  • SG: Tee-to-Green – 14th
  • Putts Per Round – 15th
  • Scrambling – 38th

Low-Tier Pick

Matt Fitzpatrick (Odds: 50/1, FPPG: 58.1, Salary: $8,000)

There’s been quite a turnaround in Matt Fitzpatrick’s game of late; to the point that he now looks a viable contender for silverware once more.

The Brit’s game had been in a tough place for a while, but chunky tee-to-green gains lately have righted the ship – T8 at the PGA Championship last time out reward for his endeavour.

Fitzpatrick’s confidence will be in bloom, and that’s a welcome addition given that he’s notched three top-ten finishes at Muirfield Village within his last three trips.

Key Stats:

  • Par 5 Birdie or Better Leaders – 37th
  • Greens in Regulation – 69th
  • SG: Tee-to-Green – 78th

Sleeper Pick for The 2025 Memorial Tournament presented by Workday

Justin Rose (Odds: 120/1, FPPG: 55.0, Salary: $6,900)

There’s something about the prestige – and perhaps the prize money – of majors and Signature Events that gets the best out of Justin Rose.

In the past 12 months, Justin Rose has recorded five top-ten finishes… all coming in either a major or a Signature Event. It’s a hit rate that most of his peers would be envious of.

You sense that Rose will love the challenge at Muirfield Village – as he did when winning here in 2010, alongside six other top-ten finishes. You could see how he thrived in the wind at the British Open last summer, before hanging tough at The Masters in another vintage display.

Whatever it is about these big events, they certainly seem to get the best out of him.

Key Stats:

  • Birdie or Better Percentage – 32nd
  • Rough Proximity – 42nd
  • SG: Approach – 76th

Alternative Sleeper Pick for The 2025 Memorial Tournament presented by Workday

Mackenzie Hughes (Odds: 120/1, FPPG: 66.0, Salary: $6,800)

It’s sometimes hard to set your watch by Mackenzie Hughes, who – for example, missed the cut at the PGA Championship having lost -3.22 strokes to the field putting… despite being a supremely reliable flatstick wielder, generally.

But the Canadian has a high performance ceiling, and seems to thrive when the conditions are at their toughest – he’s been called a ‘dog’ by various esteemed colleagues, a term which they used to refer to his toughness and resilience.

Since the middle of April, Hughes has finished T3 at another Signature Event, the RBC Heritage, and lost in a playoff at the Myrtle Beach Classic. If things get tough in Ohio, don’t bet against him pulling off something similar.

Key Stats:

  • SG: Around-the-Green – 26th
  • Scrambling – 52nd
  • Bogey Avoidance – 63rd
