Fantasy Golf Picks, Odds, and Predictions for A Military Tribute at the Greenbrier

A Military Tribute at the Greenbrier Fantasy Preview

After what felt like a torturous two-week lay-off, the PGA TOUR is back as the 2019/20 season begins in earnest.

The wraparound schedule features all of the classic hallmarks of this time of year, with stop-offs at the Sanderson Farms Championship, Shriners and Safeway Open backed by the four-event Asian Swing, which this time around will feature new tournaments in Japan and Bermuda.

The streamlined PGA TOUR itinerary has also seen two higher profile events, the Houston Open and this week’s A Military Tribute at the Greenbrier, bumped into this Fall slot in the calendar.

A trip to The Old White TPC in West Sulphur Springs, West Virginia is no bad way to kick off the new campaign, and a mixture of old heads and the new 50 players to qualify from the Korn Ferry Tour’s end-of-season countdown – young guns and grizzled veterans alike – will take this opportunity to earn some early FedEx Cup points.

Because, after all, all roads lead to East Lake for the TOUR Championship in August 2020!

Last Season’s Fantasy Results

Last season our squad picked seven players every week for 41 straight weeks.  Over that time, we picked 5 winners (one major), 5 runner-up winners, and had a 75.96% made-cut percentage.

Over the 41 weeks, we averaged a total tournament weekly winnings of $917,000 per week.  We owe a lot of that success to the GPFP Tools and Key Stats that help you narrow your search within certain salary parameters.

The A Military Tribute at the Greenbrier Field

With many of the world’s leading stars overseas as the European Tour enters its money-spinning final run of events, and others simply hibernating after a tough 2019, there is a rather sparse feel to the field this week.

Indeed, if we reveal that the top four names with the sportsbooks are Bryson DeChambeau, Bubba Watson, Viktor Hovland and Jason Kokrak, you get a flavor of what to expect in West Virginia.

Defending champion Kevin Na also tees it up, and he will be joined by a rung of would-be winners in the likes of Sungjae Im, Joaquin Niemann, Byeong Hun An and Cameron Smith.

There are plenty of Korn Ferry graduates to keep an eye out for, with one of the biggest stars in the making – Scottie Scheffler – considered a live contender here. The Korn Ferry regular points season leader, Zhang Xinjun, is also one to follow.

This Week’s Course Preview

A golf course that has yielded four winners in the shape of Kevin Na, Xander Schauffele, Danny Lee and Angel Cabrera in its last four hostings does not give a huge amount away in terms of what the layout has to offer!

This jewel in WV’s crown has one unique feature: it sits at an altitude of roughly 2000′ above sea level, and that helps the ball to fly even greater distances than normal.

And with reasonably wide fairways and charitable rough, plenty will be letting rip with the big stick this week.

That said, shorter hitters cannot be discounted either due to the altitude and the fact that a number of fairways feature dense tree lines, so there is still a premium on finding the short grass.

As a Par 70 measuring 7,287 yards, there are just two Par 5s on the real estate, and that clearly lends itself to the importance of Par 4 scoring here given that Na won in -19 last year.

Severe flooding really damaged this layout and caused the 2016 renewal to be cancelled, and the devastation required numerous changes to be made to the shaping of the course.

But these did not seem to toughen the test, and so the players can enjoy a relaxing dusting-off of the cobwebs this week in the warm West Virginian temperatures.

Weather Forecast for White Sulphur Springs, WV

Did we say those ‘warm’ West Virginian temperatures?

Yes, the thermometer will tickle a handsome 88°F this week, but there’s another problem for the players to deal with.

Rain is forecast from Friday through Sunday, and the predictions suggest this could be some pretty heavy stuff with ‘scattered thunderstorms’ expected throughout.

As is to be some crumb of comfort, the wind will be quite low with speeds of between 4-7 mph registered.

Last Year’s Results from A Military Tribute at the Greenbrier

Heading into the final round of the Greenbrier last July, there was a rather strange look to the leaderboard.

Kelly Kraft and Harold Varner III, not exactly two names that scream out prolific PGA TOUR winner, were locked at -14 with the defending champion Xander Schauffele hot on their heels at -13.

Surely it would be the X that got the win?

Well, no actually. In the end it was Kevin Na, riding an almost seven-year trophy doubt on the PGA TOUR, that confounded expectations with a final round of 64 to take the spoils and end a head-scratching run without a title.

Na was unsurprisingly emotional afterwards, and it just goes to show just how much winning means to these players whether young or old – something the contenders on Sunday will have to deal with.

And so we go again! A new season, new opportunities, and an early chance here to boost our bankroll in an event which looks to be wide-open and there for the taking.

  • PGA $300k Best Ball: We can get started with this $8 entry contest, with the winner trousering $100k and the top 20% of players bagging an ROI of 50% at the very least.
  • PGA $25k Scramble: A weak field means more head-scratching for those who don’t do their research….take advantage and aim for the $2.5k top payout.

This Week’s Fantasy Notes for A Military Tribute at the Greenbrier

These early weeks of the wraparound season are fraught with difficulties for DFS gamers, and we are into something of a suck-it-and-see approach for the next couple of events.

Which players had a productive couple of weeks off? Who are going to carry their form of last season into this – be it good or bad? Who has worked on some swing changes that could make all the difference?

These are questions we won’t really know the answers too until deep into the piece at the Greenbrier, which makes drafting a winning team a tad difficult.

We also have to take into consideration the 50 players that have graduated from the Korn Ferry Tour, be it through the regular season points list or via the Finals.

Some of these players you will know, some will be completely new, and the general feel is that now is the time to get acquainted with them. After all, Cameron Champ won the Sanderson Farms Championship in one of his first starts with the big boys, while Adam Long picked up his maiden title not all that far into the season.

So there’s lots to learn this week, and in the meanwhile we have to try and put a winning draft together!

We have some decent insights to work with at The Old White, handily. Quite simply, the equation here is working out which of the premium ball-strikers will putt the best – that’s typically the formula for success here.

This isn’t a layout that will get overpowered as such, although there will be some monumental drives backed by the altitude on some of the holes without tree-defined contours.

But with wide-enough fairways and large greens, there’s not a huge amount of danger lurking. And with soft conditions likely from the rain, this could be an attack-the-flag style shootout.

And a quick reminder: this is a Par 70 layout with just two Par 5s, so our winner will have to make hay on the Par 4s to post that championship-taking score.

Top 5 Picks/Odds to Win A Military Tribute at the Greenbrier

Top Tier Pick #1:

Bryson DeChambeau (Odds: 12/1, FPPG: 76.7, GPFP: 61.36 Salary: $11,100)

At his absolute best, this is the kind of field we would expect Bryson DeChambeau to hoover up.

He did it when winning the Shriners in 2018, and he repeated the feat when stepping down a grade to win the European Tour’s Dubai Desert Classic earlier this year.

Indeed, as a Ryder Cupper with five wins since the start of 2018, Bryson is a class above this field, and it is only his inconsistent performances of the past few months that prevent him being an even shorter favorite with the sportsbooks.

He will be hoping that this is the season where he makes his major breakthrough, but first things first Bryson will be looking to get back into the winner’s circle, and ironically he might not have a better chance of doing so than this week.

A so-so turn at the TOUR Championship ended a tough few months for the 25-year-old, who had appeared to have turned a corner in the summer when following T8 at the Travelers Championship with T2 at the 3M Open.

The way he approaches the game suggests that Bryson’s periods in the doldrums won’t last too long, and having enjoyed a couple of weeks off expect this prolific champion to return in fine fettle in West Virginia.

Key Stats:

  • Total Driving – 6th
  • SG: Putting – 28th
  • SG: Tee-to-Green – 37th
Top-Tier Pick #2:

Joaquin Niemann (Odds: 28/1, FPPG: 63.9, GPFP: 51.10 Salary: $9,700)

After a strong second-half to the season, Niemann finished just shy of qualifying for the TOUR Championship.

But the Chilean can still be satisfied with his work, particularly given how well he played from June onwards.

Just one missed cut in his ten starts in that timeframe – at the Open Championship no less – confirms his consistency, with two top-5s, a further top-10 and a T13 finish all recorded.

Niemann is a premium ball-striker who is noted for his preference for Bentgrass golf, and a top-five in this event last year highlights that The Old White suits his eye.

If he finds something with the putter on these slow-ish greens, watch out!

Key Stats:

  • Par 4 Scoring Average – 8th
  • SG: Tee-to-Green – 23rd
  • Total Driving – 35th
Mid-Tier Pick #1:

Joel Dahmen (Odds: 80/1, FPPG: 59.4, GPFP: 47.49 Salary: $8,000)

At this juncture of the season, there is an element of risk-taking required on the part of DFS aficionados.

For us, that risk will be taking a punt on Joel Dahmen, despite a rather torrid second half of last season.

With eight top-25 finishes of which two were top-10s – he ended up in solo second at the Wells Fargo Championship, Dahmen can hang in any company, but in such a weak field as this he will be expected to deliver a strong showing.

One of the nicest guys on the Tour, Dahmen has the game to do some serious damage this week, and a top-five at the Greenbrier in 2018 suggests that The Old White is a layout where he feels very much at home.

Key Stats:

  • Total Driving – 20th
  • Birdie Average – 62nd
  • SG: Approach – 77th
Mid-Tier Pick #2:

Andrew Landry (Odds: 100/1, FPPG: 54.2, GPFP: 43.37 Salary: $7,400)

When the sportsbooks set their early lines, bettors could avail themselves of odds of 150/1 on Andrew Landry to win this week.

That was crazy given the positive manner in which he ended last season, and it was little surprise to see those lines in to 100/1 and shorter within a few hours of the market going live.

Landry is a proven PGA TOUR winner after doing the business at the Texas Open in 2018, and he showed glimpses of that form in finishing solo third at the John Deere Classic and T19 at the Wyndham Championship.

Those positive swing thoughts carried through to the Northern Trust, by and large, where he served up three rounds under par in his T30 return.

At his best, Landry is an absolute flusher with iron in hand, and few in this field can lay a glove on him from that perspective.  If the flat stick behaves, he can contend once more.

Key Stats:

  • Par 4 Birdie or Better Leaders – 32nd
  • SG: Approach – 64th
  • SG: Off the Tee – 65th
Low-Tier Pick:

Doug Ghim (Odds: 200/1, FPPG: 59.0, GPFP: 47.20 Salary: $6,600)

A young man making his way in the sport, Doug Ghim has shown enough in his fledgling career to suggest he has a future at the top level.

A qualifier from the Korn Ferry finals, the 23-year-old endured an up-and-down time on that Tour in 2019 but did deliver three top-10 finishes – notably one came at the Bogata Championship, which is played at a similar altitude to The Old White.

And as if to continue the theme, he finished T8 in the European Masters over on the European Tour – another event played at altitude in the Swiss mountains.

With T12 and T20 finishes at the AT&T Byron Nelson and Farmers Insurance Open respectively, Ghim has shown that he is more than comfortable playing at the elite level.

Key Stats:

  • Driving Accuracy – 70.57%
  • Greens in Regulation – 70.47%
  • Scoring Average – 71.14

Sleeper Pick for A Military Tribute at the Greenbrier

David Hearn (Odds: 90/1, FPPG: 49.8, GPFP: 44.84 Salary: $7,400)

A former stalwart of the PGA TOUR, Hearn spent some time on the Korn Ferry Tour finding his swing in 2019 and finally got his rewards with T4 at the Tour Championship.

So he carries plenty of good vibes into a return to The Old White, where he has excelled before.

In his last three trips the Canadian has finished 30-14-2, with two top-20s prior to that, and any kind of repeat of that would be most welcome from a low-price, low-owned sleeper.

Key Stats:

  • Driving Accuracy – 13th
  • Greens in Regulation – 71st
  • Par 4 Birdie or Better Leaders – 77th

Alternative Sleeper Pick for A Military Tribute at the Greenbrier

Beau Hossler (Odds: 100/1, FPPG: 56.3, GPFP: 45.04 Salary: $7,300)

A welcome return to the big time for Beau Hossler, a talented young player who lost his way somewhat in his last full PGA TOUR campaign.

The world number 129 tried his luck on the Korn Ferry Tour and immediately something clicked, T2 at the Nationwide Children’s Hospital, followed by T25 at the Albertsons Boise Open, got him his Tour Card at the earliest possible opportunity.

A Californian by birth, Hossler is comfortable on Bentgrass and as a prolific birdie-maker and outstanding putter, the 24-year-old can get into the mix as long as his tee-to-green game is in good shape – his form suggests it might just be.

Key Stats:

  • SG: Putting – 10th
  • Approaches from 75-100 yards – 33rd
  • Birdie Average – 47th
