Fantasy Golf Picks, Odds, and Predictions for the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am

The AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am Fantasy Preview

Remember last week when we wrote about premium ball-strikers who suddenly find a bit of form with the putter? Well….

Two said individuals locked horns down the back straight at the Phoenix Open on Sunday, with Tony Finau and Webb Simpson both looking to add a rare trophy to their collection in the desert.

Finau had been excellent for the first three days, but perhaps the pressure of finally adding a second PGA TOUR title to his collection took hold in the final round as he struggled to find his normally precise tee-to-green play – indeed, it was his putter that got him out of the mire in more than one occasion.

Another man who has had his problems with the flat stick, Webb Simpson, has shown that you can teach an old dog new tricks in the past year or so – the former anchored putter finally finding some form in the traditional way.

He drained an 18-footer to force a play-off with Finau at TPC Scottsdale, and just hours prior to the Super Bowl it was Simpson who made sure that extended overtime was not required when he birdied the first extra hole to clinch his first Tour win since the Players’ Championship of 2018.

Finau, who had done little wrong, looked crestfallen. His time will surely come, and soon.

But it won’t be this week because he’s decided to sit out the AT&T Pebble Beach, the annual pro-am jolly around the former US Open host course and the satellite layouts Monterey Shore and Spyglass Hill.

Last Week’s Fantasy Results

Our top guy last week was JT, who just fell short to a T3 finish despite an impressive 4-day stretch of sub 70 golf!

He may not have held the trophy on Sunday, but there are other ways of racking up fantasy points and four rounds in the 60s is one of them.

Another way is birdies, eagles, aces and birdie streaks. JT never grabbed a bogey-less round, but his 19 birdies to 5 bogeys ratio was certainly a nice push.

The AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am Field

It may not be a classic field, but there’s certainly plenty of Pebble Beach quality on display.

Dustin Johnson, Phil Mickelson and Brandt Snedeker have won here nine times between them, while Graeme McDowell is also a US Open champion at Pebble Beach.

They will be looking to shine once more, while the likes of Patrick Cantlay, Jason Day and Matt Kuchar will be looking to open their PGA TOUR win accounts for the season.

There’s plenty of depth throughout with experience campaigners like Paul Casey, Branden Grace and Alex Noren looking to make hay in the California sunshine, and young guns like Cameron Champ, Viktor Hovland and Matt Fitzpatrick hoping to make some big moves of their own.

This Week’s Course Preview

There are three courses on the rotation this week, but they all share one common theme: make it easy for the amateurs.

So, Pebble Beach – which served up a tough assignment in last year’s US Open, becomes something of a knockabout where the wind is the only major concern. The rough is cut ultra-low, and pin positioning is kept nice and friendly for Bill Murray and co.

However, one thing that doesn’t change about Pebble Beach, which will host one of the opening rounds plus Sunday’s closer, is the size of the greens: these are some of the smallest on Tour. A bit of mastery with wedge in hand will be necessary.

And then it’s off to Spyglass Hill, a tiny Par 72 at 6,858 yards that is also ‘Linksy’ in nature but with more trees than the other two.

Finally, Monterey Shore plays at roughly strokes easier than the other pair, and while the wind does blow here the fairways are so generously proportioned that missing them is a skill in itself – besides, the rough is trimmed to barely two inches long.

The emphasis is on fun through Thursday-Sunday, before pin positions are toughened in time for Sunday’s conclusion.

Weather Forecast for Pebble Beach, CA

It’s going to be surprisingly cool in the Monterey Peninsula this week, with the early tee-offs getting started in temperatures around 44°F!

The mercury will rise throughout the day but only to a best of around 60°F, so this is a rather cool edition of this typically sunny tournament.

That said, there’s no rain in the forecast as you might expect, while the wind speeds for the first three days shouldn’t be too chastening.

The early forecast suggests these could reach 18 mph and counting by Sunday, however, so we could be in for a rather interesting conclusion.

Last Year’s Results for the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am

The chaotic leaderboard at the AT&T Pebble Beach tends to throw up some surprised, and while players rose and fell like the wind there was one name synonymous with this part of the world flying high.

Phil Mickelson completed his fifth victory at Pebble Beach in high quality fashion, posting a final round of 65 at his spiritual golfing home to leapfrog a leaderboard headed for the most part by Paul Casey.

The Englishman threw away a three-shot lead at the 54-hole stage, and could only watch on as Lefty completed a sublime final round that ran over until extra time on Monday due to darkness.

In the final round of the 2019 AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, Phil Mickelson carded seven birdies and managed to go bogey-free during play on Sunday and Monday to snag his eighth win at Pebble Beach. Where to Play Fantasy Golf for AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am this Week

Pebble Beach is one of the most loved golf courses on the circuit, and that tends to bring out a wide range of DFS gamers to the party. That needs an eclectic slate of contests to cope with demand, and the main sites have come up trumps in a big way.

  • PGA $525k Drive the Green: Why play the lottery when you scoop $100k from this $5 contest, with plenty of other exciting prizes including a minimum of $100 for the top 115 players.
  • PGA $300k Club Twirl: You’ll ‘only’ have roughly 8,000 other teams to contend with here for the $50k prize, with the top 20% of players all cashing a profit for their efforts.

This Week’s Fantasy Notes for the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am

There are so many ways to win this tournament that making a successful draft becomes a fun, if difficult, venture.

Because the rough is down, no driver is precluded from enjoying the fruits of their labor. Of course, you’d expect longer hitters to have an advantage, but then the likes of Brandt Snedeker, Vaughn Taylor and D.A. Points have won here, so shorter hitters can’t be excluded either.

With such small greens we’d expect the best in the business on approach to thrive, but with the cross winds even they will be missing the dance floor on occasion. Hence, perhaps, why Mickelson has been so successful at Pebble Beach – chipping out of this shortened rough is no problem at all.

One characteristic your picks will need to have on side is Poa Annua putting, and an ability to thrive in windy, Links style conditions.

But, on the whole, you’re looking for good all-rounders who can get hot with the flat stick ad whom won’t get frustrated with the obvious distractions that playing with amateurs of all ability levels brings.
