Fantasy Golf Picks, Odds, and Predictions for the WGC-Mexico Championship

The WGC-Mexico Championship Fantasy Preview

So far 2020 has well and truly been the year of the Aussie.

Cameron Smith won the Sony Open, Marc Leishman took down the Farmers Insurance Open and now Adam Scott has triumphed in the Genesis Invitational to end a four-year trophy drought on the PGA TOUR.

Some have claimed the dire situation with forest fires is the inspiration, while others claim the motivation came from the Rest of the World’s final day demise at the Presidents Cup.

Either way, the men from Down Under are making it work for them.

Maybe we shouldn’t be too surprised that the 39-year-old prospered: despite some rust given that this was his first start of the year, Scott knows Riviera well, enjoys the challenge and when it plays hard and fast like it did last week few are better placed to take on the assignment.

It was a crucial victory for a man who by his own admission is not the hardest working on Tour, and keeps his world ranking nice and lofty – while adding useful FedEx Cup points to his collection.

A few more big performances and Scott can enjoy more time off to get stuck into his second major passion in life: surfing.

The Aussie won’t have much need for his board in the landlocked Mexico City for this week’s event: the first WGC of the year at Club de Golf Chapultepec.

Last Week’s Fantasy Results

Adam Scott pushed through to over take a charging McIlroy (T5), who was our top pick going into the week.  Overall, we finished with two players in the Top 26 and missed a few to the dreaded cut line.

The bright spot for us was the 5 for 5 make cuts from the Tuesday Sleeper Report, but unfortunately, Adam Scott was not on our radar last week.

Now we turn our attention to a WGC event and we’re looking pretty good so far in 2019-2020 with 5 winners picked.

The WGC-Mexico Championship Field

This is a field primed by who isn’t here as much as who is.

The likes of Patrick Cantlay, Tony Finau and Rickie Fowler have opted to work on their game back home, so while this is a WGC event there are some notable names missing.

That said, there’s still plenty to get excited about with the possibility of defending champion Dustin Johnson going toe-to-toe with Rory McIlroy, Justin Thomas and Jon Rahm south of the border.

Phoenix Open champion Webb Simpson makes the trip as do Leishman and Scott, while the European Tour charge will be led by Tommy Fleetwood, Louis Oosthuizen and Shane Lowry.

There will be plenty for the home fans to get excited about too, with Abraham Ancer and Carlos Ortiz flying the flag for Mexico.

This Week’s Course Preview

One of the key factors that separates the wheat from the chaff at Golf Club de Chapultepec is the incredible altitude of 7400ft above sea level, which dictates that the ball travels approximately 10% further than it ordinarily might.

That means this otherwise lengthy Par 71 stretch of 7,345 yards plays considerably shorter than the numbers suggest.

An almost completely flat parklands course, Golf Club de Chapultepec features tree lined, Kikuyu fairways and rough – which the announcers at Riviera over the weekend were so keen to remind us, time after time, how difficult that is to play out of.

That said, the fairways are wide enough that even Phil Mickelson has won here, and he – plus two-time champion Dustin Johnson – reveal that the strategy here is pretty straightforward here: whack it long off the tee then play some majestic wedges into these small Poa Annua greens.

Otherwise, it’s a case of enjoying the warm Mexican sun and seeing what happens.

Weather Forecast for Mexico City, MEX

It’s a nice, sunny and warm outlook for Naucalpan de Juarez this week, with the wind dying out into the weekend to provide a calm platform for this tournament to play out in.

Thursday and Sunday look set to be the best days of the week, with the mercury hitting 82°F and clear, sunny spells there to be enjoyed.

Friday and Saturday look set to be a touch cooler, thanks to the cloud that appears to be rolling in, but it’s still very pleasant at 77°F.

As for the wind, this will probably peak on Thursday at around the 14 mph, but then it looks set to drop off in 2 mph increments in time for a peaceful Sunday conclusion.

Last Year’s Results for the WGC-Mexico Championship

Some players struggle to get over the line when winning on the PGA TOUR, while others see the finishing line and positively leap over it.

Dustin Johnson has flirted with both camps during his stellar career, but last year at the WGC-Mexico Championship he was very much in dominant fashion.

He’d crafted a comfortable lead heading into Sunday’s final round, but as a player who has occasionally balked when sensing the trophy is his there was still plenty to play for.

But this course specialist got his nerves out of the way early, bogeying his first hole, before going on to crush the field with a series of birdies in a high-quality round of 66.

Rory McIlroy tried to get close with five birdies of his own in a remarkable seven-hole stretch, but DJ would not be denied and such was his authority that he ended up ten shots clear of the field bar the Irishman.

Dustin Johnson Highlights | Round 4 | WGC-Mexico 2019

In the final round of the 2019 World Golf Championships-Mexico Championship, Dustin Johnson registered a 5-under 66 on his way to getting to 21-under for the tournament to grab his 20th career PGA TOUR victory. Where to Play Fantasy Golf for WGC-Mexico Championship this Week

These WGC events tend to bring the best out of the DFS sites, and this Mexico trip is no different with a varied and prestigious slate of contests on offer.

  • PGA $800k Resurgence: There’s $200k to the winner in this $10 contest, with the top 20% of players bagging a prize and the top 155 teams earning their owners a minimum of $100.
  • PGA $125k Birdie: A more compact contest than Resurgence, you can still net $10k in this 49,544 player game where multi-team entry is capped at 20.

This Week’s Fantasy Notes for the WGC-Mexico Championship

Sometimes we can dig really deep into a tournament and a golf course to build a profile of what might be a platform for success.

But then when you look at an event and see the last three winners are Dustin Johnson (x2) and Phil Mickelson, there’s really no need to look any further!

It would be unfair to call Golf Club de Chapultepec a bomb-and-gouge contest – it’s a bit more nuanced than that, but clearly shot-making around these small greens will be the differentiator this week.

Given the altitude everyone in the field will be long, and the fairways are generous enough in width to provide plenty of forgiveness. However, stray too far off line and chipping out of Kikuyu becomes something of a nightmare.

Look out for players who are comfortable at altitude though, because club selection will make a big difference. There’s a few examples to look to: the Phoenix Open, Shriners and the Greenbrier are just three events to consider.
