Fantasy Golf Picks and Predictions for the 2014 RBC Canadian Open

This Week’s Tournament Preview

With three majors in the books this season, the PGA TOUR now heads back across the Atlantic to Canada for the 2014 RBC Canadian Open.

A significant number of the world’s elite golfers will be taking a rest this week to catch their breath after chasing Rory around Royal Liverpool. Returning champion Brandt Snedeker and a number of other notables will however be present in the RBC Canadian Open field.

This week’s event marks the thirtieth tournament of the year and will serve as one of the two final tune-ups before moving into the season’s final major, the PGA Championship.

Last Week’s Fantasy Results

Last week’s Open Championship yielded us $1.364 million in total fantasy earnings with our sleeper pick Rickie Fowler (T2) and Top 5 pick Adam Scott (T5) bringing in a combined $1,145,549.

Here’s to yet another great week as all seven picks, including our top five picks to win and two sleeper picks made the cut, thus all earning money during the Open Championship and keeping our weekly fantasy winnings average over $1.2m.

The Field

World No. 5 ranked Matt Kuchar will join defending champ Brandt Snedeker, and other 2014 stars Dustin Johnson, Jim Furyk and Charl Schwartzel at this week’s RBC Canadian Open. In total, this week’s field includes 24 players will be returning fresh from the British Open.

Hometown hero Graeme DeLaet who represented Canada in the 2013 President’s Cup will contend against another Canadian, Mike Weir, who won the Masters in 2003.

There are a lot of solid picks this week buried in this mixed field, the challenge will be finding those who will get you the most bang for your fantasy buck at the Royal Blue Course.

The Course

Royal Montreal GC (Blue Course) measures in at 7,153 yards and plays as a par 70. The course dates back to 1873 when it first a established its footprint as being the first North American golf course. In 1904, this course hosted the Canadian Open and has since served as the backdrop for countless other large professional tournaments.

This year’s event will mark the fifth Canadian Open played on the Blue course, which also hosted the ’07 Presidents Cup.

Royal Montreal presents it challenges, and we’ll be connecting its key performance stats to our picks this week. There is also a threat of inclement weather on Friday and Saturday, but nothing significant enough to pose a threat to someone going low like Snedeker did last year with his third round 63.

2013 Results

We all remember last year’s event when Hunter Mahan had a controlling lead heading into he weekend but backed out to attend the birth of his first child. Perhaps no one was more grateful of Mrs. Mahan’s due date than Brandt Snedeker who seized the opportunity and won with a 3-shot victory.Mahan had a two-stroke lead after 36 holes, but that lead was all history once he withdrew.

Dustin Johnson was also in the mix when he held the lead with two holes left, but was bounced out of contention with a tough triple-bogey. DJ ended up tied for 2nd with Matt Kuchar, Will McGirt, and Jason Bohn.

Here is wrap-up of Round 4 from last year’s edition of The RBC Canadian Open:

This Week’s Fantasy Notes

As mentioned earlier, the 2014 RBC field is missing a few of the OWGR top names due to many choosing to take a break following last week’s Open Championship. However, a significant amount of talent will still be on hand to try their luck at Royal Montreal.

With that said, we’re looking at the Royal Montreal Blue Course and determining which players’ games are suited best for the course. The track plays short so long ball hitters who can match their distance performance with equal effectiveness on the putting green should have no problem going low this week. We also have a few solid sleeper picks in mind that can get the job done for your fantasy lineups this week (more on that in a moment).

Top 5 Picks/Odds to Win the 2014 RBC Canadian Open

  • Dustin Johnson (Golficity Odds 6/1): We were impressed with DJ’s play at Royal Liverpool despite a few errant shots in the final round that caused him to fall to a T12 finish. Notably, Dustin is no stranger to this event, as he finished T2 at Glen Abbey last year and tends to make cuts everywhere he plays. Putting together a bit of a run, DJ now has eight straight cuts made and five top 25s. This week, the track is relatively short and his long ball should help him strike gold on the par-5s. This time of year it’s also important to account for the fact that the season is winding down and the FedExCup playoffs are not too far off in the distance, which is certainly on the mind of pros trying to stay in the race. DJ is currently sitting comfortably in third but there’s always room for more breathing space.
  • Jim Furyk  (Golficity Odds 8/1): No question here, Furyk will most likely be the favorite of many oddsmakers this week. The two-time champ is also the all-time money leader at this event and is coming off a fresh fourth place finish at The Open Championship (where he put together an unbelievable fourth round). We’ll see if he can put that momentum back into action this week. Currently, Furyk has nine top 20s in last ten starts and is an easy Ryder Cup member and perhaps a FedExCup playoffs contender. Grab him in your first place spot if you’ve overused Johnson.
  • Graeme McDowell (Golficity Odds 18/1): We haven’t heard a lot of noise from G-Mac on the PGA TOUR this year but he’s been quietly heating up overseas and it’s widely known that he loves this course. He also recently notched a T6 in Ireland and a victory in France and now comes into Canada fresh off of a T9  at The Open. McDowell also owns one of the most important stats on TOUR (strokes gained-putting) and that should help him stay in the mix this weekend.
  • Matt Kuchar (Golficity Odds 25/1): We’d normally have Kuch as our number one pick on this course, but we haven’t seen a Top 10 from him in his last five starts, which is concerning for a guy of his caliber (he also had a disappointing T54 at The Open last week). Kuch is usually a cut-making Top 10 animal, and he’s a pure competitor, so perhaps this is week he turns it around. We’re staying away from him in salary cap leagues, but grab him as an easy roster pick in Yahoo! or a GolfZING league.
  • Brandt Snedeker (Golficity Odds 33/1): We we’re tempted to lean towards Luke Donald all in this final spot, but since Snedeker’s T9 at Royal Liverpool showed some real signs of life (compared with Donald’s T64), we’ve decided to give the defending champ a go. Sneds has three Top 25s coming into this event and isn’t far off from making Watson’s Ryder Cup team. Look for him to play well this week.

Sleeper Picks/Odds to Win the 2014 RBC Canadian Open

  • Charlie Hoffman (Golficity Odds 40/1): Hoffman is a solid sleeper pick this week, although he may cost too much in some salary cap leagues so only gamble on him if the price is right. Charlie comes into this event with twelve consecutive cuts made, five of which were top 20s. In his most recent finish at the Quicken Loans National at Congressional he finished T3 and currently ranks tenth on TOUR in GIR. He’s a solid sleeper pick this week for sure.
  • Graham DeLaet (Golficity Odds 60/1): We’re stretching here, but trying to offer dark horse that can really give your fantasy team a boost this week. If you need it, try running with Canada’s top-ranked golfer who also happens to lead the TOUR in ball-striking. DeLaet is a solid choice and he ranks 21st in adjusted scoring and has a home field advantage (something that should not be overlooked). At 60/1 he’s a long shot pick for sure but we’ve seen some shakeups recently and he would be the guy to give us another one.
