Fantasy Golf Picks and Predictions for the 2016 Made In Denmark

The 2016 Made In Denmark Fantasy Preview

The European TOUR heads to Denmark this week for one of the newest and most fun stops of the year at the Made in Denmark Open.  The event is played at Himmerland Golf & Spa Resort in Farso, Denmark and features 7,033 yards of par-71 golf on a windy, link-style course.  This is just the third year that this tournament will be played, but it is already thought of as one of the most enjoyable for all who are in attendance with a Waste Management Open feel behind huge crowds and a music festival.

The field at the top of the board seems very even with the likes of Martin Kaymer, Thomas Pieters, Matthew Fitzpatrick, Soren Kjeldsen, Andy Sullivan, and Shane Lowry being among the favorites.  Kaymer will be joined by Darren Clarke and YE Yang as past major winners in the field as they attempt to defeat the two past victors here; Marc Warren and David Horsey.  Kjesldsen will be looking to take down this event in his home country and with a big performance could be on the short list of players earning a wild card choice for the Ryder Cup.  Shane Lowry will also certainly be looking to impress Ryder Cup captain Darren Clarke after choosing to play here instead of in the Barclays where he has a solid ranking in the FedExCup Playoffs.

There has not been too much history in this event with it dating back to 2014, but the victors have put up solid marks with Warren’s nine-under and Horsey’s 13-under as they were both able to distance from the runners-up by two strokes. Last year there was plenty of competition breathing down Horsey’s neck with four players (Kristoffer Broberg, Daniel Guant, Soren Kjeldsen, Terry Pilkadaris) finishing in second.

The addition of the European Tour events to daily fantasy sites has certainly broadened the interest of the Tour to different areas and below are a few players who could help improve fantasy squads this week.

2016 Made In Denmark Fantasy Picks

Top Option – Thomas Pieters – $11,500 – Pieters has had a fantastic season on the European TOUR in 2016 and is currently in line to improve on his 29th place finish in the Race to Dubai from last year thanks to four finishes in the top four.  The best advantage he currently has going for him is how he is playing of late as he followed up his 30th in the U.S. Open with a fourth at the Olympic Games and came in as the runner-up last week in the Czech Masters with a score of 14-under.  The 24-year-old has a huge drive (301.1 yards per, 16th on TOUR) and has hit 68.6% of GIR (52nd on TOUR), leading to the 12th-best scoring average (70.88) overseas.  Pieters has improved each year on the TOUR and looks poised to become one of the breakout players in the coming years.

Mid-Tier – David Lipsky – $8,600 –  American David Lipsky is a real tournament player here as he has a realistic chance of winning an event when he goes out each week, but has also missed the money a fair amount.  Over his last nine events, Lipsky has managed a ninth at the Volvo China Open and a sixth last week in the Czech Masters, but has also missed out on the money four times.  The 28-year-old’s confidence should be high heading to Denmark as he has placed in the top-15 at each of his last two visits here, including shooting seven-under over the weekend last year to jump into a tie for 14th.  Watch for Lipsky to hit his share of greens in regulation (67.9%, 63rd on TOUR) and add to his impressive resume at Himmerland.

Mid-Tier – Johan Carlsson – $8,000 – Johan Carlsson is enjoying a career season at the age of 29 with a current ranking of 54th in the Race to Dubai.  The Swedish-born golfer has been one of the most consistent mid-tier options this year, making it into the money in 17-of-20 (85%) opportunities, but has yet to break into the top-three.  He has made it into the money in his last six starts, averaging a finish of 32nd during that stretch, and should remain a solid option to match or improve on that this week.  His drive (300.3 yards per, 19th on TOUR) is one of the best out there and his recent play should aid him on improving on his best mark of 45th at this tournament.

Mid-Tier – Magnus Carlsson – $7,000 – Magnus Carlsson has been on fire for a player coming in at a mere seven grand, cashing a check at each of his last five events with no finish worse than 38th.  In that group of outings he earned his second top-10 of the season at Lyoness Open and has now been under par at three of his past four tourneys.  Carlsson has lost his power over the years, now hitting the ball for a mere 283.6 yards per drive, but has still managed to hit 71.2% of GIR (23rd on TOUR) and is showing he can obviously still compete.  For the price, Carlsson seems like a safe bet to continue his run of nice performances.

Bargain Buy – Dean Burmester – $6,200 – Burmester has jumped between the European and Challenge Tour this season, but has played a mere 14 events during the current campaign.  Of those, 10 came on the European Tour where he has managed to get into the money nine times and has a solid 30.40 average finishing position to go along with his two top-10s.  Although it looks like he does not have too much experience, playing a total of 30 tourneys since 2011, he has made his name on the Sunshine Tour in South Africa.  There he has racked up wins in bunches, totaling six since 2013 with four of those coming just last year.  In his short time playing on the European Tour in 2016, Burmester has wowed everyone with the biggest drive among his peers (320.7 yards per) and currently ranks 18th in stroke average (71.11).  There is tons of value in Burmester this week as he has really never done poorly when playing in European Tour events, he just hasn’t played in all that many.
