Fantasy Golf Predictions - 2013 US Open

Fantasy Golf Predictions for the 2013 U.S. Open (113th Edition) June 13 – 16, 2013

Preview:   The final round of the 2013 U.S. Open will be held on Father’s Day with most of these pro’s own parents in attendance this weekend to watch their sons try to take home one of the most coveted trophies in golf.  Last year’s winner Webb Simpson is back in the field this week to defend his Open title which he won in style after Graeme McDowell missed a putt that could have sent the match to bonus holes at Olympic Club.

This will be the 18th time that Merion has hosted a USGA championship which is more than any other venue. While damp conditions due to recent heavy rains will help prevent a lot of roll, the tough rough will force players to be precise off the tee.

Of course we need to mention the famous wicker baskets that sit atop all 18 metal poles (not fiberglass sticks). Holes 1-9 feature red baskets with red-and-white-striped poles and the baskets on the front nine are orange on top of orange-and-white-striped poles. Should a golfer lob an approach into a basket, he will be allowed to place the ball on the lip of the cup without penalty. Pretty interesting…we’d aim for the basket every time.

The Course:  At 6,996 yards, Merion plays as a tight par-70 layout with fairways and greens that require a heightened sense of skill and strategy…but the good news is that there is its fair share of risk reward throughout the track. The par 5s come early at holes 2 and 4, but there is also a seven-hole stretch — Nos. 7-13 — where the longest is just 403 yards.  Scorable? Yes…but tricky to say the least.

The Weather at Merion in Ardmore, PA (from weather.com):

  • Round 1: Thursday (June 13) 73 degrees, 50% chance of rain, scattered T-storms/wind.
  • Round 2: Friday (June 14) 74 degrees, 20% chance of rain, mostly cloudy.
  • Round 3: Saturday (June 15) 78 degrees, 0% chance of rain, sunny.
  • Round 4: Sunday  (June 16) 78 degrees, 10% chance of rain, mostly sunny.

2012 Results:  Webb Simpson grabbed a one-stroke victory when Jim Furyk choked and Graeme McDowell’s rally fell short at Olympic Club.  Who can forget the condescending jokes flying around staying that Furyk’s big sponsor, 5-hour energy, should have given him the 6-hour drink.  Simpson went bogey-free over the final 13 holes carding a 68 that Sunday, including a tough up-and-down at No.18. Then it was off to the clubhouse to watch his fate on TV as Furyk bogeyed two of his final three holes.  G-Mac made four bogeys on the front nine, but gave himself a chance with a birdie at No. 17. However, his approach at No. 18 came no closer than 25 feet giving him only a slim chance to take the tournament to extra holes.

Side Notes:  Eyes will be on Sergio Garcia to see if he bounces back after his collapse at Sawgrass in May as well as to see if he provides Tiger Woods with an awaited apology for the racial slur that he mentioned in a press conference after the PLAYERS.

Top 5 Picks/Odds to Win The 2013 U.S. Open:

  • Tiger Woods (Golficity Odds 5/2): The three-time U.S. Open champion will be making his 18th appearance at this event. Tiger leads the PGA TOUR with four victories and is 1st in adjusted scoring and the all-around ranking. Poor iron play and putting issues led him down en route to T65 at Memorial two weeks ago where he looked absolutely terrible…but we have seen Tiger bounce back and win tournaments after terrible performances before. Woods finished the Honda Classic in March of this year at T37 and then went on a tear the next 2 weeks, winning at WGC Cadillac and The Arnold Palmer Invitational.  Oh, and he won the PLAYERS in May.
  • Graeme McDowell (Golficity Odds 9/1): G-Mac has two wins in last four starts, including the Volvo World Match Play Championship which is Bulgaria’s first-ever European Tour event. He’s 7-for-7 in made cuts the U.S. Open with a win in 2010 and a T2 last year. He loves this event and we can see him taking it again.
  • Matt Kuchar (Golficity Odds 14/1):  Kuchar is one of the hottest players on TOUR and now holds the 4th ranked golfer in the world status. He’s one of only two multiple winners on TOUR this year and he also notched a solo second at Colonial before taking the Memorial crown.  Kuch is 13th in strokes gained-putting, fourth in adjusted scoring, T7 in par-4 scoring and fourth in par-5 scoring.  A true candidate for the 1st place finish this week…
  • Phil Mickelson (Golficity Odds 20/1): Phil is a five time runner up at this event (among nine top 10s).  The lefty arrives in good form with a T2 at TPC Southwind last week where he almost pulled out the victory – his fourth top-three finish of the year.
  • Charl Schwartzel (Golficity Odds 27/1): Schwartzel continues to play consistent golf. We like Charl’s chances on US soil this year.  His T8 at Muirfield Village was his 11th top 10 in his last 16 stroke-play starts worldwide.

Sleeper Picks/Odds to Win:

  • Adam Scott (Golficity Odds 33/1):   This week marks another chance for a major for the Aussie green jacket winner. His victory at the Masters is one of five top 20s this year and the most recent was a T13 at Muirfield Village.  The Vegas odds on him this week are probably smaller, but we don’t think he can compete…he’s a sleeper at best.
  • Justin Rose (Golficity Odds 37/1): Rose is 3-for-7 in made cuts at the U.S. Open with three top 25s but just hasn’t made enough noise this year.  We don’t fully expect him to be at the top of the leader board this week but you just never know with this guy.  If we had to pick the ultimate dark horse, its J-Rose.
