Fantasy Golf Predictions - 2013 Travelers Championship

Fantasy Golf Predictions for the 2013 Travelers Championship June 20-23, 2013

Preview: The good news is that you won’t have to hear the word Merion for a while, but let us be the first to introduce you to TPC River Highlands, a track the pros should sink their teeth into after struggling through last week’s US Open.  In 2011, TPC River Highlands played as the easiest par 70 on TOUR but has recently slipped in ranking, getting a little bit tougher over the last year.  We’re pretty confident that +1 will not be a winning score this week, as TPC River Highlands is one the shortest tracks remaining on the 2013 schedule. We’re anticipating the star studded field will be rattling off quite a few eagles and birdies on the first 15 holes. Nos. 15, 16 and 17 make up “The Golden Triangle” but no real danger worth mentioning comes into play.

The CourseTPC River Highlands measures 6,841 yards and plays as a par 70. Situated on a mountain top overlooking the Connecticut River, this track was redesigned by Pete Dye in 1982, with former PGA TOUR pros Howard Twitty and Roger Maltbie serving as consultants.

Weather in Cromwell, CT (from weather.com):

  • Thursday (June 20): 77 degrees, mostly sunny, 0% chance of rain.
  • Friday (June 21): 78 degrees, partly cloudy, 10% chance of rain.
  • Saturday (June 22): 79 degrees, partly cloudy, 20% chance of rain.
  • Sunday (June 23): 81 degrees, isolated t-storms, 30% chance of rain.

2012 Results: Marc Leishman overcame a six-shot deficit with an 8-under-par 62 in his final round and sat around waiting in the clubhouse for about two and a half hours before learning that he was taking home the crown. The Aussie went out and made eight birdies in a bogey-free Sunday.  Even so, it wasn’t until Charley Hoffman’s double bogey/bogey finish that Leishman could finally celebrate his victory. Hoffman had the title in his hand until he blew up and gave up his two-shot lead coming to No. 17, where his tee shot found the water. Roland Thatcher was also in contention but he bogeyed the 18th to finish behind runners-up Hoffman and Bubba Watson.

Side Notes: Here is an interesting stat: Five of the past seven champions were first time winners at the event including Leishman, Bubba Watson and Hunter Mahan (2007). Lee Westwood will make his inaugural visit to TPC River Highlands this year and recent winner Harris English is one of four entrants seeking to join Tiger Woods and Matt Kuchar as multiple winners in 2013.

Top 5 Picks to Win the 2013 Travelers Championship:

  • Hunter Mahan (Golficity Odds 10/1):  Mahan is the all-time money leader at the Travelers Championship.  He knows and plays this tournament well which is why we are putting him up top.  Hunter has a win, two T2s and a T4 among eight cuts made in 11 starts. He’s also coming off a fresh T4 at the U.S. Open, his best finish in a stroke-play event since winning in Houston last year.
  • Rickie Fowler (Golficity Odds 18/1): Rickie shared 10th place at the U.S. Open where he silenced any doubters with a fantastic 67 in the third round putting him among the best the field that day.  Fowler tied for 13th in his last appearance at TPC River Highlands back in 2010 and is overdue for a win this year.
  • Justin Rose (Golficity Odds 22/1): JR is bursting with confidence after his major breakthrough at Merion last week and he’ll be carrying that momentum into TPC River Highlands. J-Rose has four top 20s at TPC River Highlands with all three being top 10s. Oh and by the way,we picked him last week to win the US Open.
  • Lee Westwood (Golficity Odds 28/1) Just his second appearance in this event (T51, 2005) but he’s got a top 15 in six of his last seven starts worldwide, including a T15 at the U.S. Open. Wouldn’t bet him high, but got a feeling Westy could see a trophy this year, and this could be the event.
  • Ryan Moore (Golficity Odds 35/1) Eventhough he hasn’t made much noise this year we like this guy’s odds quite a bit.  Moore has two top 15s in his last five starts, but he missed the cut in the other three. We love his 6-for-7 record of cuts made at TPC River Highlands with a pair of T2s, a T4 and an actual scoring average of 67.692. He’s also fifth in all-time earnings at the Travelers Championship.

Sleeper Picks/Odds to Win:

  • Marc Leishman (Golficity Odds 55/1) The defending champion emerged with his first and only PGA TOUR title last year carding a 62 in the final round. We like defending champs because they always have a certain level of confidence going back into a tournament.  Although it’s a long shot he’ll repeat, Marc does have four T10s this year (but also missed the cut at Merion last week).  Sleeper pick for sure…
  • Jason Dufner (Golficity Odds 75/1) This is Duf’s first appearance at the Travelers Championship since missing the cut in 2008, but he’s coming off a season-best T4 at the U.S. Open where he closed with a field-tying-low 67. Dufner had a breakout year last year and just like Brandt Snedeker, we haven’t heard much from him this year.  This is our ultimate dark-horse pick of the week; pick him as a long shot.

Last Week’s Fantasy Golf Prediction Results from The 2013 US Open:

  • Tiger Woods (Golficity Odds 5/2): T32
  • Graeme McDowell (Golficity Odds 9/1): MC
  • Matt Kuchar (Golficity Odds 14/1):  T28
  • Phil Mickelson (Golficity Odds 20/1):  T2
  • Charl Schwartzel (Golficity Odds 27/1):  14

Sleeper Picks/Odds to Win:

  • Adam Scott (Golficity Odds 33/1):   T45
  • Justin Rose (Golficity Odds 37/1):  WINNER
