Fantasy Golf Sleeper Report – 2021 World Wide Technology Championship at Mayakoba

2021 World Wide Technology Championship at Mayakoba Fantasy Sleeper Report
In truth, there was maybe two-dozen players who had a genuine crack at winning the Bermuda Championship last week, and in the end the trophy went to a player who is no stranger to the winner’s circle.
Lucas Herbert may not be all that well known stateside, but he’s a two-time victor on the European Tour and clearly knows how to take care of business – with the high winds buffeting the Royal Port course, the Australian was in his element.
Herbert gutsed it out in tough conditions, and balancing the odd slice of luck with a regular show of quality he converted by one shot from a rejuvenated Patrick reed to claim his first PGA TOUR title. That will secure him two years of playing rights, plus an invite to The Masters amongst other things. A good week’s work, all told.
The normally-beautiful Bermuda was besieged with strong winds and heavy rain last week, but there’s better news in store for another idyllic coastal resort this time around – the sun will be out in Playa del Carmen, our host for the wordy World Wide Technology Championship at Mayakoba.
There’s a better class of player making the trip south too, and they will enjoy the typically resplendent El Camaleon Golf Club with the sunshine beating down and the wind at a manageable clip – hold onto your hat as it will be birdie central this week.
A quality field that includes defending champion Viktor Hovland, Justin Thomas, Brooks Koepka and home hero Abraham Ancer are just some of the standouts in the hunt for silverware, and they will enjoy a Greg Norman designed layout that does yield to first-class golf.
A short 6,987 yards for its Par 71, El Camaleon features sumptuous ocean-facing holes and those that head slightly in-land to mangrove heavy jungle, which helps to make this track one of the most aesthetically-pleasing around.
With the wind down, it’s one of the easiest on the PGA TOUR too, and as long as the players can navigate the slow Paspalum greens there is very little else to worry about.
Birdie shootouts by the sea can produce the odd surprise winner, and so we can head into this Mexican fiesta with confidence that our sleeper plays can come up with the goods. But who has made our sleeper shortlist for the World Wide Technology Championship at Mayakoba?

2021 World Wide Technology Championship at Mayakoba Fantasy Sleeper Report
Rickie Fowler – 50/1 – Is Rickie back? Only time will tell, but his T3 finish at the CJ Cup was the best he has played in a long time.
Not so good at the ZOZO Championship, was young Rickie, but then we can forgive a below-par effort in a different country and completely unique conditions.
Besides, he should enjoy life at El Camaleon – he was T2 here in 2017 – and neither the wind nor the requirement to shoot low numbers will faze him.
A winner in locations as far flung as the Bahamas and Abu Dhabi, Fowler’s game travels when he’s at this best – we can expect good things from him in Mexico too.
Maverick McNealy – 50/1 – Eagle eyed observers will have noted that Maverick McNealy has a fondness for El Camaleon. Hinted at with returns of 12-26, he has posted rounds of 63 and 65 here in those visits.
He’s a young man with plenty of previous on coastal tracks, finishing runner-up in the AT&T Pebble Beach and Korn Ferry Tour’s LECOM Suncoast Classic, and T4 at the RBC Heritage.
One of the most impressive youngsters on the PGA TOUR, McNealy’s game is perfect for these conditions – he’ll be looking to make it count to some tune this week.
Harold Varner III – 90/1 – In our modified event rankings, Harold Varner III was in the top five for SG: Ball Striking at the CJ Cup, and top-five for SG: Short Game at the Fortinet Championship!
The point is that if he can find a way to combine both elements, HVIII should be in an ideal place to finally get that first PGA TOUR title in his collection.
Four consecutive top-20s were followed by that T32 in the CJ Cup, and all is good in the Varner camp right now – he is a new dad….and we all know how that can end up out on the course.
Joel Dahmen – 100/1 – Having broken his title duck on the Paspalum greens of Punta Cana, we can expect another strong turn from Joel Dahmen on the surface this week.
In his last four trips to El Camaleon, he has delivered three top-30s – the pick of the bunch being T6 in 2019.
So this is a surface he clearly enjoys, and his game is in a good enough place to fully capitalize this week. His ball-striking was sublime at Shriners (T24), and an improvement on the greens – that seems plausible given his love for Paspalum – would help to push Dhamne closer to the top of the leaderboard.
Adam Long – 100/1 – Some players just love certain golf courses, and having finished second here in 2019 and T3 a year later, Adam Long and El Camaleon are a match made in heaven.
Not only that, he posted rounds of 63 in both of those trips, and so this is a guy who knows how to take this layout to town.
Long is not necessarily the kind of player you want carrying your money, but T25 last time out at the ZOZO Championship and T29 at Sanderson Farms are promising enough to give him a try this week.
