2022 Sentry Tournament of Champions Fantasy Sleeper Report

Here we go again! Into the breach of what should be a stellar 2022 for the PGA TOUR and world golf in general.

The action kicks off in customary fashion with the Tournament of Champions, to which all of last season’s 39 PGA TOUR event winners have been invited.

And all have responded in the positive and will tee it up in Maui, Hawaii – all, that is, apart from Rory McIlroy, whose keeping his clubs holstered for a while longer yet.

In his place comes Xander Schauffele, the Olympic champion, to complete a 39-man field packed with quality – including former winners of this event like the defending champ, Harris English, plus Justin Thomas, Jordan Spieth, Patrick Reed and others.

Add into the mix the likes of Jon Rahm, Collin Morikawa, Bryson DeChambeau, Brooks Koepka and Viktor Hovland, to name a few, and you’ve got yourselves a rather attractive yearly opener!

The sun looks set to beat down on the players too on that beautiful island of Hawaii, and with the wind almost curiously benign – according to the early forecasts at least – the Kapalua Resort course will very much be there for the taking.

Those with long memories may recall Spieth winning here at -30 a few years ago, and while the scoring has settled slightly from there a mark of -22 or lower is likely to be needed to lift the first trophy of 2022.

That’s because Kapalua offers very little in the way of hazards or concerns, and with expansive fairways and greens even the tardiest of ball-strikers will find their way onto the dancefloor in good order – to offer one example, last year Adam Scott hit an extraordinary 93.1% of greens in regulation.

Nearly half of the field made 80% GIR or better, and so you get a pretty clear impression of what it takes to prevail at Kapalua – hitting your ball very close time and time again, or having a sublime week with the flat stick.

In a field stacked with quality, we’ve made it our mission to find some nuggets of gold at sportsbook odds of 50/1 or greater – no mean feat in a 39-man field, and here’s five that we believe can far outperform their price and perhaps even challenge for honors at the 2022 Tournament of Champions.

2022 Sentry Tournament of Champions Fantasy Sleeper Report

Max Homa – 80/1 – One of the exciting breed of new talents breaking through, Max Homa is already up to 35 in the world and with good reason.

He’s now a three-time PGA TOUR champion, picking up wins at the Genesis Invitational and Fortinet Championship in 2021 to go with his triumph at the Wells Fargo in 2019.

Homa’s best work doesn’t generally come on Bermuda greens, but he has shown enough quality to suggest he can win on the surface even in quality company like that of the ToC. Seeking the next breakthrough of his career, Homa is a live contender this week.

Seamus Power – 80/1 – The Irishman reached new heights in 2021, serving up a catalog of top-10 and 20 finishes.

The pinnacle was victory at the Barbasol Championship, but you could argue that top-10s at the RSM Classic, Rocket Mortgage Classic and AT&T Byron Nelson were all the more impressive.

An improved tee-to-green game has laid the foundation for Power’s improvement, and on his favored Bermuda greens he has to be given serious consideration this week.

Joel Dahmen – 125/1 – A player that has often threatened to kick on, Joel Dahmen is yet to kick on into the elite of the PGA TOUR.

But he’s a TOUR winner with a major top-10 to his name and a T12 at the PLAYERS, and strong showings at Punta Cana and Mayakoba suggests he enjoys coastal jaunts away from the United States.

A solid operator with flat stick in hand, Dahmen is most at home on Bermuda greens – this week, he could considerably outperform these 125/1 odds.

Lucas Herbert – 125/1 – Something of a curveball entry into the Tournament of Champions is Lucas Herbert, an Australian with just a handful of PGA TOUR performances to his name.

But victory at the Bermuda Championship finds him in Hawaii this week, and like all Aussies he will be battling hard to prove his worth as more than just a player to make up the numbers.

Herbert has twice won on the DP World Tour, and one of those victories came at the Irish Open in conditions akin to a rather chillier version of Hawaii. He also boasts a pair of top-fives in the Scottish Open, and so we know he will be at home by the coast and facing an ocean breeze, should one arrive.

Kevin Kisner – 150/1 – While considered one of the also-rans in this field, don’t be too quick to discard Kevin Kisner – a winner on TOUR as recently as the Wyndham Championship.

As Harris English and others have proved, a lack of length does not have to be a major hindrance at Kapalua, and instead hitting high GIR counts and making putts is the primary currency – an area in which Kisner tends to excel.

A winner at the RSM Classic, a runner-up in the British Open and RBC Heritage and T4 in the Sony Open proves that these are conditions Kisner enjoys….expect him to make that count this week.
