2025 Genesis Invitational Fantasy Sleeper Report

If pro golfers look back on their careers and pick out their favorite days, Friday and Saturday at the Phoenix Open might just get the nod from Thomas Detry.

The Belgian laid waste to TPC Scottsdale on those particular days, firing rounds of 64 and 65 to assert his dominance on the field, before closing out with a nerveless 65 again on Sunday – remarkably so for a guy that hasn’t won a singles title since his days on the European Challenge Tour in 2018.

Detry will never forget those closing holes on Sunday as he zeroed in on his maiden PGA TOUR trophy, but it was Friday and Saturday in which he really separated himself from the field – days in which everything he hit turned to gold.

And in a Ryder Cup year too, no less…

The 32-year-old produced the best ball-striking performance of his career in Phoenix, and that’s a skillset that will treat him very kindly as we make the transition to the Genesis Invitational.

Ordinarily, this Signature Event would take place at the Riviera Country Club in the Pacific Palisades, but unfortunately the damage and the fallout of the Californian fires have meant that the venue will take the year off hosting duties in 2025.

In its place for one year only comes Torrey Pines South, which some of you will already know as the host (it welcomes three of the four rounds played) of the Farmers Insurance Open, as well as the U.S. Open back in 2021.

That status reveals just how tough Torrey Pines can be set up, and when the wind blows you have a cocktail that will leave the players with an almighty headache. In breezy conditions, and with the wind up, Harris English won the 2025 Farmers in January despite finding just 38% of fairways and 57% of greens in regulation.

Fortunately for him, his recovery and short games were in fine fettle, and this week – on Thursday and Friday in particular, where the weather looks set to be at its worst – that could once again prove telling.

This is a Signature Event, which of course means that a stellar field is in town. All of the key players on the PGA TOUR are in San Diego – save for local favorite Xander Schauffele, who continues to battle back from injury.

But otherwise, there’s Scottie, Rory, Collin, Hideki, Ludvig… you get the picture, while Jordan Spieth will continue his comeback from wrist surgery too. Oh, and there’s a chap by the name of Tiger Woods teeing it up… an eight-time winner at Torrey Pines, no less.

He could have perhaps picked an easier assignment for a rare PGA TOUR appearance, mind you. The South Course at Torrey Pines measures the best part of 7,700 yards for its Par 72, making it the longest course on the rotation. There’s elevation changes too, so this week will be a physical examination for the players… particularly if the predicted rains and strong winds on Thursday and Friday do come along.

The freakier the conditions, the more likely we’ll have a long odds winner. In that spirit, here’s our sleeper shortlist for the 2025 Genesis Invitational.

Keegan Bradley – 55/1 – There’s nothing wrong in life, or in golf, with the slow and steady approach, and Keegan Bradley has built a career around that.

He generally does everything well, with a reliable long game matched by rock-solid chipping and scrambling. His putting isn’t world class, but he rarely has a shocking week on the greens, either.

So, in that sense, Bradley’s simplistic approach is a useful weapon at Torrey Pines, where taking par and moving onto the next hole can often be a winning strategy. The fact that he’s finished second, fourth, and fifth here – amongst other strong showings – is evidence of that.

A former PGA Championship winner, who ground out victory at the Atlanta Athletic Club with a score of -8, with a pair of U.S. Open top-tens, when things get complicated out on the course, Bradley has stood up to be counted to some success.

Thomas Detry – 55/1 – You never quite know how a maiden winner on TOUR is going to react a matter of days after lifting a trophy for the first time.

There’s further intrigue and mystery to Thomas Detry, given that his long game at the Phoenix Open was so good… in fact, that was his best ball-striking performance by a country mile on the PGA TOUR.

Can he replicate it? Who knows, but he has an improving record at Torrey Pines – MC-37-20-15 – and has shown a penchant for grinding out scores in tough conditions, as evidenced by top-15 finishes in both the U.S. Open and British Open.

Maverick McNealy – 55/1 – A regular feature of these pages over the past few weeks, it’s hard to shake the notion that Maverick McNealy won’t have a run at another trophy soon.

His ball-striking is, quite literally, the best it’s been at any point in his career, with some meaty gains on the field coming in that department during – and since – his win at the RSM Classic in November.

And, historically, his short game has been excellent, with his flatstick heating up nicely in Phoenix with a +1.97 gain on the field.

McNealy hasn’t always delivered at Torrey Pines, and he certainly didn’t in the Farmers back in January (T52). But that came after he’d played pretty poorly at the Sony Open, whereas in Phoenix last week he was outstanding once more in a T9 finish.

Sam Stevens – 70/1 – Right now, all of the pieces of the puzzle are in the box for Sam Stevens… he’s just got to figure out how to put them together.

His 2025 has got off to an excellent start from a ball-striking perspective, making huge gains at the Farmers (solo second) and Pebble Beach (T17).

There was a regression at the Phoenix Open, but where his ball-striking fell down, his putting picked up the slack – +1.20 saw him rank amongst the top-ten on the greens of those who made the cut.

Stevens has finished second and thirteenth at Torrey Pines, with that former effort coming in touch conditions back in January – that at least proves he’s got the game and the character to ride out the wind should it blow again this week.

Daniel Berger – 90/1 – Aside from Detry, the biggest smiles on faces perhaps belonged to Justin Thomas, Jordan Spieth, and Daniel Berger.

The three old mates are all very much on the comeback trail from injury and a loss of form, with each now shaping up as a potential PGA TOUR event winner in 2025.

Daniel Berger’s case is particularly interesting. He’s found it difficult to return to former glories, but has slowly edged back into good touch – T2 at the RSM Classic in November culmination of that positive work.

He seems to have added extra yardage off the tee during the winter offseason, and that will also help him to compete at layouts, like Torrey Pines, where you need extra clout with driver in hand.

He was poor at the Farmers a few weeks ago, hence his lowly price this time around, but T7 at the U.S. Open at Torrey Pines in 2021 confirms that, at his best, Berger was very much able to compete with the best at this layout.
