Genesis Scottish Open Fantasy Sleeper Report

If some players spent less time in the gym and more time honing their all-round game, they might just be able to emulate the increasingly impressive career of Brian Campbell. Make no mistake, Campbell hits the ball about as far as some club hackers. But he is blessed with deadly accuracy and a more-than-handy short game, which in itself is still enough to win on the PGA TOUR.

The rookie now has two titles to his name, adding the John Deere Classic trophy to his collection on Sunday to go with February’s Mexico Open.

This was Campbell to a tee: pounding fairways and greens, and making putts with relentless regularity. That strategy was enough to earn him a playoff place against Emiliano Grillo, where his laser-like accuracy secured him par on the first extra hole… enough to walk away with the title.

There’s a lesson in that for all golfers… whether a local trier or a PGA TOUR professional. The schedule now takes a hop and a skip across the pond, with the Scottish Open this week followed by the final major of the year next: the British Open. Eight of the last eleven winners of the British Open had played in the Scottish Open the week before, so you can see how important this primer in Scotland is in determining the outcome of the Claret Jug.

It’s off to the Renaissance Club we go for the fourth time since the Scottish Open became a co-sanctioned event between the PGA TOUR and the DP World Tour. Xander Schauffele and Rory McIlroy – both British Open champions on the Links, of course – won the first two editions, before a hometown boy got over the line 12 months ago.

Robert MacIntyre almost downed McIlroy in 2023, but he returned a year later as a PGA TOUR winner having landed the Canadian Open title earlier that summer. And it was that experience, you fancy, that propelled him to victory in front of his enraptured home support at the Renaissance Club 12 months ago.

On a chaotic Sunday, it was the Scot who showed the most composure down the home straight. He made two clutch birdies and an eagle in the closing stretch to ultimately take the title by one shot from the fast-finishing Adam Scott. The 2024 renewal was unique in just how easy the Renaissance Club played compared to previous years. For context, Schauffele won with a score of -7 in 2022… last year, 33 players finished on -10 or better.

It’s a tale as old as time: Links golf courses defined by the weather. In benign conditions, the Renaissance Club is tameable, and the early forecast for Berwick in Scotland suggests a somewhat breezy but sunny and warmish week – ideal for 72 holes of Links golf.

It’s no secret to the players now that playing the Scottish Open gives them the best platform from which to attack the British Open a week later – hence the stellar field meeting in Scotland. Scheffler, McIlroy, Schauffele, Morikawa, Thomas, Hovland, and many more big names will assemble, while the best of the DP World Tour will also feature in conditions that many of them will already be familiar with.

But who will land the trophy? Here’s five that could in our Scottish Open 2025 sleeper shortlist.

Adam Scott – 50/1 – Why not have a punt on a rinse and repeat for Adam Scott from 12 months ago?

The Australian could have won this title but for some heroics from MacIntyre down the closing stretch, but Scott will have plenty of good memories from the Renaissance Club nonetheless.

He returns to Scotland with plenty of strong form in the tank. He’s finished T34 or higher in each of his last five starts, which have included two majors – T12 at the U.S. Open and T19 at the PGA Championship – and a trio of Signature Events.

Aaron Rai – 60/1 – A winner of this event in 2020 before its co-sanctioned status, Aaron Rai has three top-ten finishes to his name at the Renaissance Club in seven visits.

A return to the United Kingdom will be welcome then, given that Rai has been solid – if unspectacular – of late.

That said, T19 at the PGA Championship is an excellent return, which was followed by T17 at the Travelers Championship, so we can say that Rai has the ammunition and the confidence to go and challenge in Scotland once more.

Nicolai Hojgaard – 90/1 – With a stack of low rounds to his name at the Renaissance Club, Nicolai Hojgaard knows this joint as well as anybody.

He would have been looking forward to returning to Scotland then, but will surely be even more so now after an intriguing turn at the Rocket Classic last time out.

The Dane gained an average of +1.40 strokes on the field there with his ball-striking, which marks a return to form for a player who has, by and large, struggled in recent months.

But 90/1 for a supremely talented sort that finished T6 here in 2023? That seems more than fair.

Rasmus Neergaard-Petersen – 90/1 – The remarkable ascent of Rasmus Neergaard-Petersen continued at the U.S. Open two starts ago, where he finished T12 in a fine week for the Dane.

So strong are his performances that he’s even knocking on the door of the Ryder Cup team – despite being barely known a year ago. Ludvig Aberg chartered a similar course to his fellow Scandinavian two years ago, and he’s gone on to do alright for himself.

T4 at the Alfred Dunhill Links in October, it wouldn’t be a surprise to regular DP World Tour followers if Neergard-Petersen was to take down a world-class field this week.

Thriston Lawrence – 125/1 – There was a period on the Sunday of the 2024 British Open that Thriston Lawrence looked set to pull of an almighty shock by winning the Claret Jug.

He ended up in solo fourth, but even so the South African showcased his Links prowess to some tune – although his formline at the Renaissance Club is patchy, Lawrence has fired some low rounds here.

Having struggled initially on the PGA TOUR, Lawrence is now in bloom – T12 at the U.S. Open followed by T8 at the Rocket Classic. He’s timing his return to form perfectly for the Links Swing…
