The RBC Heritage Fantasy Sleeper Report

At last!

Even the most stone-hearted of golf fans must have felt something when Rory McIlroy slumped to his knees, sobbing uncontrollably, after finally – somehow – winning The Masters on Sunday.

After a nervy start, the Northern Irishman settled into his task and had fashioned a comfortable lead for himself. But winning golf tournaments is hard… winning majors is harder… closing out the career grand slam harder still.

But, by hook or by crook, McIlroy got the job done – etching his name in the list of career grand slam winners whose membership is just Gene Sarazen, Ben Hogan, Gary Player, Jack Nicklaus, and Tiger Woods.

That’s good company to be in…

Even for those with nothing invested in the outcome, the finale of The Masters on Sunday was an emotional, rollercoaster watch. It’s unlikely, thankfully, that this week’s RBC Heritage will be able to match that for jaw-dropping entertainment and anguish.

That’s not to downplay what is the latest Signature Event, mind you. Harbour Town Links, the host venue, is a fun coastal track with plenty of unique features, and with Pete Dye on design duty you just know that the players aren’t going to have things all their own way.

Factor in ocean breezes, some tight fairways, water in play on every hole, and small, upturned saucer-shaped greens, and you have the recipe for more drama come Sunday.

And a quality field will assemble too, with McIlroy and Hideki Matsuyama the only truly significant absentees – 16 of the OWGR top-20 will be heading for Hilton Head Island.

Whether they can wrestle the Tartan Jacket from Scottie Scheffler remains to be seen. He was in uncompromising form here 12 months ago, beating Sahith Theegala into second by three shots, and he will be desperate to open his win account in 2025.

His iron and wedge game in particular will be well tested at Harbour Town, so has Scottie got what it takes to defend his title? Only time will tell, but we’re going to offer up five other sleeper picks for the 2025 RBC Heritage that we believe can contend for the trophy.

Daniel Berger – 50/1 – After a solid Florida Swing, the good times keep on rolling for Daniel Berger.

He finished T15, T20, and T25 in the Sunshine State, before producing an excellent ball-striking performance at The Masters – gaining +1.25 on the world-class field in that department.

Indeed, his T21 at Augusta might have been better but for a quiet week for Berger’s short game, but that has been a rarity of late, and the switch to Bermuda-based greens will help.

He’s finished T33 or higher in his last four trips to Harbour Town; headlined by a T3 finish here in 2020.

Justin Rose – 60/1 – Although we’re asking Justin Rose to bounce back emotionally from his playoff defeat at Augusta, the 2024 edition of the RBC Heritage showed that a strong week in contention at The Masters can be backed up immediately.

The Englishman should take a lot of pride in his efforts last week; both in terms of his finishing position and his performance, with Rose delivering his best ball-striking numbers since the British Open last summer.

Replication of that, at a venue where he has a top-ten finish to his name already, is suggestive of another strong week for the veteran if he can shake off his Masters disappointment.

J.T. Poston – 60/1 – It was the ideal lead-in week for J.T. Poston, who made the cut at The Masters, played solidly in all departments, but didn’t have the emotional upheaval of a title charge.

Because he might just have one of those at Harbour Town, if his record at the venue is anything to go by. Poston has played here six times and recorded four top-ten finishes, which is remarkably consistent and shows that he can turn it on at this layout seemingly irrespective of his lead-in form.

Poston hasn’t missed a cut since January, and just needs all departments of his game to fire at the same time – rather than sporadically at different times of late. Where better for that to happen than one of his favorite stops on the TOUR?

Davis Thompson – 66/1 – You probably couldn’t ask for much more on your Masters debut than what Davis Thompson delivered. He ranked sixth for SG: Approach in a world-class field and, in something of a rarity for debutants, made the cut and finished a respectable T46.

His iron and wedge play has been in outstanding fettle for a while now, and that – allied to his clever game around the greens – should give him a chance to thrive at Harbour Town.

Indeed, being able to sheath driver once in a while could also help, with Thompson long but occasionally erratic with the big stick, and a T10 finish at the PLAYERS Championship in March – a similar club-down assignment – bodes well.

If his putter pops, as it can, then Thompson could be in for a rewarding week.

J.J. Spaun – 70/1 – A superb run during the Florida Swing offers hope that J.J. Spaun can match – or better – his previous best of T6 at Harbour Town this week.

He made the cut at Augusta, which is a course that doesn’t really suit his game, and instead this week’s test of irons and wedges looks ideal for Spaun to capitalize on his recent good form.

He finished second at the Cognizant Classic, before losing in a playoff at the Pete Dye designed TPC Sawgrass against Rory McIlroy in March, where he produced an outstanding tee-to-green performance.
