Sanderson Farms Championship Fantasy Sleeper Report

It was the Ryder Cup… but unlike anything we’ve ever seen before.

The crowds were more akin to a football game or a soccer match, with several players – notably Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry – evidently losing their cool as the patron behavior verged from the anarchic to the simply out-of-order.

It’s a shame that the crowd antics will take the headlines, because this was otherwise golf on a knife edge; Team USA, so poor on Friday and Saturday, redeeming themselves with warrior-like performances on Sunday.

But, as the history books will attest, it simply wasn’t enough as the Europeans successfully defended their Ryder Cup title.

After the roller coaster of emotions at Bethpage Black, we all have to dust ourselves off and go again as the PGA TOUR returns for its FedEx Fall. And why not get things underway at an event that has thrown up plenty of long odds winners over the years… including some 500/1 champions!

Of course, those are hard to predict and even harder to find, usually, but there’s still plenty of value to be enjoyed a little higher up the betting… as we’ll explore later in this preview.

So, what is it about the Sanderson Farms Championship that makes it so good for long odds outsiders? The host track, the Country Club of Jackson, certainly helps.

It features wide open fairways and minimal rough, which means that there’s very little penalty off the tee – that keeps plenty of players in the hunt. It also means that at a Par 72 track measuring upside of 7,200 yards, the big hitters have something of an advantage… particularly on the quartet of Par 5s and the drivable Par 4.

The layout doesn’t get much trickier from there. In fact, last year, a handful of players in the field were able to record GIR counts of 75% despite finding 50% of fairways, which shows that these Bermuda greens are easy to find and hold – whether from the short grass or the ever-so-slightly longer.

Winning scores of late-teens or early-20s under par are needed, which means that making plenty of birdies is necessary – so separation on the leaderboard will also be created by a strong putting week.

But it might just be unlikely suspects that show a strong hand with the flatstick. The 2024 champion, Kevin Yu, delivered the best putting performance of his PGA TOUR when winning here – literally, given that his +2.09 SG: Putting gain was the only time in his 84 starts that he’s gone over +2.00.

And that shows a similarity with Luke List, the 2023 Sanderson Farms winner. He gained +1.35 on the field per round putting, which was his best display that season and one that he’s only bettered twice since.

Both Yu and List are long, strong premium ball strikers, but was the fact that they delivered career-defining putting numbers a coincidence, or a symptom of how easy the greens at the Country Club of Jackson are to read?

The two prior winners at the venue, MacKenzie Hughes and Sam Burns, are both outstanding on the greens, so it feels like putting will be the key variable this week – whether it’s the usual suspects, or some unlikely candidates.

With all that in mind, who makes the great in our 2025 Sanderson Farms Championship sleeper shortlist?

Mark Hubbard – 50/1 – If Mark Hubbard is to ever end his winless run on the PGA TOUR, it might well come at the Country Club of Jackson, where he’s finished T5 and T6 in his last three visits.

Hubbard has the class to win on the PGA TOUR, make no mistake, with a number of top-five finishes to his name. One of those came in his penultimate outing at the Wyndham Championship, where he bookended his tournament with exceptional rounds of 63.

Long enough to contend and strong enough on the greens to close out a win, Hubbard is a nice price this week.

Patrick Fishburn – 50/1 – A so-so start to the year gave way to some positive vibes in the summer for Patrick Fishburn, who will be relishing a crack at the Country Club of Jackson.

Three finishes of T8 or better in recent months highlight the upside, which ahs come about thanks to a considerable improvement on the greens – Fishburn has gained on the field putting in each of his last five recorded starts.

Our winner this week will probably need to hit ball far and definitely needs to putt well… Fishburn ticks both those boxes alright.

Cameron Champ – 55/1 – Of all the players in this field that have played the Sanderson Farms Championship more than once, who has the lowest scoring average at Country Club of Jackson?

The answer is Cameron Champ, whose 68.36 has been permed from a win here in 2018 and a T9 in 2023, aside from T28 and MC turns.

He will do what Champ has always done: hit it miles and make some putts. If he can get the middle bit right, as he did this summer when T9 at the Canadian Open and T14 at the ISCO Championship, perhaps Cameron will contend once again in Jackson.

Matti Schmid – 80/1 – With four top-10 finishes on the PGA TOUR this year, and another on the DP World Tour, the potential upside of Matti Schmid needs little introduction.

Super long off the tee and reliable on the greens, the German has the ideal makeup for modern day golf – it would be no surprise if he was to win on the PGA TOUR in the coming months and years.

He certainly fits the brief at the Country Club of Jackson, where a T16 finish a year ago featured rounds of 66, 67, and 68.

Lanto Griffin – 90/1 – One player that would have been furious about the enforced break after the Procore Championship will have been Lanto Griffin.

He delivered his best approach play and putting performances of 2025 on his way to solo third in Napa, and how he’d love to replicate that this week.

And he just might. Griffin has been sneaky good in the Sanderson Farms Championship, with a best finish of T11, but also rounds of 67 and 68 on his ledger here in other appearances, too.
