Fantasy Golf Sleeper Report – Memorial Tournament
2020 Memorial Tournament Fantasy Sleeper Report
When the finale is as dramatic and as tense as the shootout between Collin Morikawa and Justin Thomas was at the Workday Charity Open, you remember why you fell in love with this game in the first place!
In the end momentum played the key role – Thomas had made a hash of his closing three holes in regulation play, while Morikawa finished with a hot hand – but not before both had sunk monster putts to keep the show on the road.
It was Morikawa who eventually got over the line to frank one of the most bizarre stats around: he has now won more PGA TOUR titles than he has missed cuts.

Playing at the same Muirfield Village course this week for the Memorial Tournament, will Morikawa fancy his chances of doubling up? He will think so and the sportsbooks don’t necessarily disagree – shaving ten points off his odds despite the field this week containing McIlroy, Koepka, Johnson, Woods and a certain DeChambeau, B.
Funnily enough, looking through the archives of our sleeper reports we note that we backed Bryson to win this very event in 2018 at staggering odds of 66/1 – it’s unlikely you will be seeing those again any time in a hurry!
If you go further back, there were equally glorious days for long-odds backers with Jason Dufner (66/1), William McGirt (200/1) and David Lingmerth (400/1) all within the last five years.
Can we expect anything similar this week? It seems unlikely that we will see a Lingmerth-esque style champion given the quality of the field, but there are some nice picks available at 50/1 plus who can take care of business.
If you read our preview of the Workday Charity Open, you will already have a flavor of what to expect from Muirfield Village in what will be our second trip to the Jack Nicklaus layout in the space of two weeks.
Fairly long at just over 7,400 yards for its Par 72, there’s a need to stay out of the rough – we expect event organizers to keep that up this week, while the Bentgrass/Poa greens will run sharply if the rain stays away, and so a good all-round tee-to-green game is key.
And guess what: you don’t win in a field of this class without having a good week with the flat stick.
It seems as though we’re looking for class acts to prevail at this week’s event then, so let’s stick a few of those into the mix for our Memorial Tournament sleeper report.

Memorial Tournament Fantasy Sleeper Report
Abraham Ancer – 50/1 – It would be a tall order for the short Mexican to win a tournament of this class given that he is yet to break his PGA TOUR duck, but he has been playing so well lately that there is at least a chance.
Ancer is strong in all departments apart from, perhaps, chipping, so if he can have a good week off tee and on approach – he ranked second for SG: Tee-to-Green at the RBC Heritage – then he can let his fluid putting stroke shine.
A run of form 11-2-14 explains the Mexican’s shortish odds, but there’s no harm in following in a player who has few flaws in his armory.
Patrick Reed – 55/1 – It’s quite hard to know what happened to Patrick Reed at the Workday last week, who played dream-like golf at times before a catastrophic Saturday saw him tumble down the leaderboard.
But there was certainly some excellence from the former Masters champion on display, and while his short game remains masterful there were some positive signs off the tee and on approach at times too.
He’ll need to improve again this week, but 55/1 about a proven and classy winner is more than fair.
Jason Day – 60/1 – It’s been quite some time since Jason Day was in anything like the form to come upon our radar.
But there have been the odd signs of life from the Aussie since golf’s restart, and his closing 67 at the Workday last week really was the best golf he has played in quite some time.
Day ranked 14th for SG: Tee-to-Green there, and more pressingly if organizers are able to get their wish of fast conditions then he will be bang up for that given his brilliant chipping game around the greens.
Sergio Garcia – 70/1 – Stats are stats, and they don’t always tell the whole story, but it’s fair to say that few have impressed from tee-to-green quite like Sergio Garcia since the resumption of the season.
And that’s a handy starter for the Spaniard, who has been putting terribly this season, but if he can find something on the greens this week then he will surely get into the mix based upon his recent ball-striking.
Amazingly, this is Garcia’s first look at Muirfield Village, but it’s a layout that should suit his eye and enable him to continue his recent improvements.
Kevin Kisner – 100/1 – Another player who is hustling his way back towards something like his best is Kevin Kisner.
We know he hits plenty of fairways and we know he is an excellent putter, but it’s always been the in-between bit that lets the 36-year-old down.
However, his approach game was in decent order at the Rocket Mortgage Classic, and rounds of 65 and 66 there on his way to solo third show he is ready to put low numbers on the board. Two top-10s at Muirfield also whet the appetite.
